I’ve just got the back end cloud from the big cells to my west. Nothing at all here. Rather be 15 miles east in the sunshine still, this is just crappy gloomy skies with no payload.

No surprise there mate, wouldn't have expected anything else from you!!!

Well then, although I'll not like some of the derogatory things you've aimed at fellow posters, Mark...I will say one thing: the sooner this horrible humidity goes away, the better!

I remember being in London, way back in either late July or early August 1973 (back in the days when 82f was still considered 'hot') and seeing torrents of water cascading down the steps to the Underground, following a short, but intense, thunderstorm... and I missed all the action!

August 1981 and 1987 were the standout storms in london for me, also August 1986 on a sunday night.

Yes I don't think this spell can be considered to be better than that. But 1976 was the best in living memory.

I'd probably give this a draw with 2003 - for heat without a break, this was slightly better, but of course we haven't had that signature 100F+ day.

I'm speaking about the area immediately around me of course; Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, maybe London?

I thought it would be interesting to look back and see similar spells where we have had consecutive days above 30c (have sometimes added in days if just below 30c if it was part of a consecutive day run of temperatures). I've decided to only go back to 2003 as this could take me all day!

The below data is for London Heathrow.

So far in this spell, we have had 6 consecutive days, not just above 30c but above 33c. Peak temperature looks to be 36.4c (unless we beat that today). We could exceed 30c again tomorrow which could make it 7 consecutive days at 30c+:

August 2020

7th: 36.4c

8th: 33.4c

9th: 33.8c

10th: 35.5c

11th: 35.7c

12th (today): 35.3c (provisional)

13th: TBC - possible we get another 30c+

Add in the 37.8c on 31st July and we have had a pretty exceptional run of high temperatures.

I’ll admit it’s a bit on the hot side for me (especially at night) but it is an interesting and exceptional event, plus there have been some seriously beefy thunderstorms, with likely more to come. It’s also about time we had a hot August, as so many recent August’s have been pretty disappointingly autumnal. The heat won’t last much longer.

Only a few Augusts where hot weather was long lasting. 1983,84,89,90,95, 2003, 2013 had some decent weather and also first half of 2018.

And while the storms rage on to my distant north, the heat continues here in the Solent. Currently 29C, down from a  max of 31.3C.

Latest ARPEGE has a 30C in the N Midlands on Friday, so maybe a another 30+ day still to come

Aye, I do remember 1981. I especially recall the cracking storm we had (in Milton Keynes) on the morning of June 3... What a funny year that was -- not a lot of heat, but some cracking thunderstorms?

Same here, no bother as it was half five it arrived. Still I will moan that Heathrow has probably recorded the maximum temperature.... again!!!

That batch of thunderstorms formed literally a few miles to the west of me and then moved westwards! Not seen a drop of rain here in NE London.

Derogatory....i feel a better term is disagree....but your welcome to disagree! As for the humidity, i work in far far more humid conditions year round, but its the sleeping that the issue for so many, especially the elderly at this time that is such a concern, they are really suffering in this heat.

Early August was hot in 1981, but the summer as a whole was cool.

Hilarious! Since 1961 is like no time in the history of the British Isles. I'm sure before recorded history this happened quite often like in the medieval warm period, 40C has unofficially been reached no doubt many times here in the past few thousand years.

That's why they use the term "Record" ?‍♂️

It didn't even reach 30c in August 1981. I can't call it 'hot' unless it is 30c or warmer.

Thunderstorm right over us with heavy rain.  I watched it on the weather radar, it just bubbled up from nothing.

Edit: current time 6:55pm

Amazing what a change in wind direction does.

About an hour ago the temperature was 30.3C, but the wind direction veered to NE and it fell 28.2C.

Models showing temps falling back over the coming days.

UKMO for instance, has 'uppers'  back close to average in a few days.

Warm yes and probably more usable weather for many.

We've had that wind direction here since Saturday. Our max temps here since then:

8th: 20.7C
9th: 19.3C
10th 22.1C
11th: 25.9C
12th: 23.5C

Its been bone dry apart from 0.6mm this morning aswell. No chance of any thunderstorms here with the onshore breeze killing the convection.

August 1995 was similar, temperatures were much moderated due to a persistent breeze from the sea. The mean temp was actually lower than August 2018 and 2019.

Reached 33c once again in lowland East London so that is our sixth consecutive day above 30c - not record breaking in terms of intensity but noteworthy in terms of longevity.

Last night was very uncomfortable for sleeping and I fear it will need 3-4 days for the brickwork to fully release the heat.

NO afternoon storms for us - all the action to the west and NW but the huge area of heavy rain coming out of Normandy may well have our name on it.

Very oppressive here in warks. Accu. App showing 33c.

Too hot to do anything really. There is no breeze and last night was the worst trying to sleep.

As we are both into our 70s all we are doing is sitting in front of a fan and taking in plenty of cold water and squash.

This weather is OK if on seaside or hotel with a pool break, otherwise it is simply an ordeal to suffer until it breaks, hopefully soon.

Very hot here too. 29°C. Cool down starts tommorow!

Well that’s something I definitely didn’t expect. Are SE winds typically hot there?

29c is still fairly hot, and it was hot enough to produce storms.
