The heat is shifting east now. Lots of 34s/35s from London up to the midlands, to E Anglia and down into Kent. Don't think we'll see any higher than 37.8C, which was a bit of a shock wasn't it!

Not really unfortunately.

As said its interesting to know the worst case scenarios have been ruled out but that also means the best case scenario has been ruled out.

Honestly though I haven't had timet o worry about climate change with COVID.

Climate change will kill far more by a factor of at least 1000 than Covid sadly,it will be just more prolonged and effecting the least able to cope.

Well I don’t think many of us woke up this morning and thought we’d experience the 3rd hottest day on record! It’s been absolutely sweltering here in London today,

Overcast here now with a few spots of light rain. Felt very muggy outside earlier after it clouded over but feeling a bit fresher outside now.

Anyone know which location was hottest after Heathrow? And what the peak temperature was?

Topped off at 36c here in East London - unpleasant but not as humid as it could have been. As always, a little bit of breeze off the river helped a fraction.

I reckon we'll reach 40c one day in the next twenty years either in London or somewhere in East or South-East England. Three of the five hottest days have been in the past five years - make of that what you will.

Next 20 years? Sooner than that I’d say.

Cities and towns expanding year on year, more traffic more tarmac more concrete, more of everything to push temperatures up.

Couldn't even stay warm here for a whole day. By mid afternoon it had clouded over with a cool breeze making it feel similar to how it has done for a lot of this month.

I must admit It has shocked me today at just effortlessly the heat built to extreme temperatures. Rubbish cool July and then boom 100F in one day! It seems like in the past the heat would have to have build for days for it to get to those temperatures. I reckon we will see 40C in the next 7 years personally.

Interestingly the storm does seem to have drained some of the heat. Already down to 19C with 16C minima forecast.

July 2020 has been a back to front July 2015.  A good chance it will have the same CET of 15.9C, too!

Can’t believe it was 37.8C at Heathrow earlier, especially after a dismal July. The third hottest day on record  It seems many these record days seem to occur as short blasts in cool summers (2019 wasn’t). Heatwaves of 25 July 2019, 1 July 2015 and 31 July 2020 only lasted a few days. There was no record in long heatwaves like Summer 2018

Yes it is strange that. In the past the highest temperatures used to occur in the hottest summers like 1990 and 2003.

Amazing to record the 3rd hottest day on record today...and the heat was also more intense over a wider area than forecast. Into the low 30s even across Northern England today.

And to think some people on here were predicting we wouldn't go higher than 34C! The first rule in these kind of spells is always to expect temperatures to go higher than forecast. The synoptics were always there for something much warmer than 34C. A series of hot days beforehand is simply not necessary if the uppers are high enough- especially in this day and age.

Maxed out at 34.2C around 5pm. We had a brief thunderstorm after that.

Usually in long heatwaves like 2018, 1995, 1976 etc it's because of persistent high pressure over the UK. But apart from the CET these types of synoptics don't usually bring record breaking heat - but the heat that it does bring is longer lasting of course. For record breaking heat it's almost always plumes from Iberia/Africa which bring us that like today. But these synoptics don't last long. Already the cooler air is with us. The heat has been shunted away now.

The ease at which we seem to be recording these extreme temperatures is worrying. Only a matter of time before we hit 40 I think.

Easily the worst conditions I've ever had to sleep in for night shifts, utterly grim. Highly doubt it's going to cool down as much as the models suggest tonight. We seem to have flatlined at around 20-21C here under stubborn cloud which is annoying, was hoping it would be nice and cool in my room by the time I get home at about 8am.
