COVID-19 Pandemic

Recommended Posts

School closure wise, as far as I understand it, schools were told to get ready for this Friday a week or so ago, but it wasnt a definite date. Seeing as the rough plan was always Friday a week or so ago, and this is almost the exact point when schools would have to close anyway due to staffing etc, then you could say their "modelling" was bang on. Could just be a fluke though.

So that dispels some of the claims made in the media and in here.

Surprised everyone?

I think certainly we have been quicker with some of the restrictive measures, I think we have been slower with shutting schools, but that was always lower down on our priority list.

We will see the proof such of a claim a week or two down the line.

The one thing I will say is deaths wise, we seem to be tracking very close to Spain/Italy at the moment, which is deeply worrying.

Not at all surprised. I have had to catch myself thinking weeks and weeks have passed in this crazy situation when it's only been days, but in general I've had a good idea when we've implemented things like money to support businesses and social isolation relative to other countries. We have done these things later than most other European countries because they are already further into their epidemics, but relatively we have done them earlier.

The Friday date may well have come from a union leak. A date looks likely to have been discussed and agreed on beforehand, but kept schtum (though as you say there have been rumours for a while now).

My belief is from what I've heard they were originally going to try and drag it out to Easter, but once the cases started coming in we were told to get prepared and to have everything ready to go for this date.

I think this was the earliest realistic date they were going to pull the trigger, but I think they were expecting to make it another week to start with at least, but the data has changed, so therefore the needs have changed.

Coronavirus: New treatment for critically ill patients to begin as soon as next week

that does sound promising, will probably be another week or so before we find out whether it has been helpful. Even if it just ends up helping the recovery times, that will still be a massive win as it reduces the threat of the hospitals being overwhelmed. If we get lucky, it will do alot more than that!

Synairgen to start trial of SNG001 in COVID-19 imminently

Quote

Southampton, UK – 18 March 2020: Synairgen plc (SNG.L), the respiratory drug discovery and development company, today announces that it has received expedited approvals from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Health Research Authority (HRA) to conduct a trial of SNG001 (inhaled formulation of interferon-beta-1a) in COVID-19 patients to potentially assist with the global outbreak of the virus.

To show the importance of contact tracing .

ARS for Nouvelle Aquitaine region has 242 confirmed cases . They managed to trace 1113 contacts . That’s still likely to miss quite a few but without that tracing you could have potentially over a thousand people unaware they might be infected.

Evening all,

Very worrying and upsetting Day, for Yours Truly.

After having a reasonable Afternoon, my Wife's condition seems to have worsened Tonight.

High Temperature, sweating and that dry Cough, back again.

My Wife, myself and my two Stepsons are approaching the end of our first Day of "self isolation", after my Wife exhibited those suspect symptoms, this Morning.

Only another 13 Days to go (hopefully).

I've marked off the 14 Days in my Diary, where I keep a record of the taking of my B.P. Medication, etc.

First Day of "freedom" (hopefully) will be, April Fools Day. Seems very appropriate.

You're all invited to our P.I.P. (Post Isolation Party). But don't bring a bottle, bring a Toilet Roll and Face Mask!!

The upsetting news for me, was regarding my Son Antony.

As I've mentioned on many Threads, Antony is in the advanced stages of Huntington's Disease.

This was inherited from his Mother, my first Wife.

He lives with my Daughter (his Sister), and her Boyfriend. Unfortunately and sadly, myself and my Daughter havn't spoken, since last May. Although I've tried reconciliations and offered "olive branches" of peace.

They've all been declined, leading to an intolerable situation, which has gone on for far too long now!!

It's a very complex story, which is far too complex and personal, to explain on here, and sadly my Daughter has also inherited the HD Gene, and will soon go on to develop this awful Disease.

Having looked after my first Wife for many Years, when she suffered from this cruel disease, I know it's imperative to have a break from all the stresses of looking after a loved one, with HD.

I was very upset that my Daughter couldn't find it in her, to tell her Father that she'd placed her Brother, in Respite Care and gone off to Canada with her Boyfriend. I was very distressed to find out this information, from my Sister.

I eventually calmed down, after speaking to my Wife and Sister. We all agreed that it was probably the best place to be at the moment (as long as it's not a BUPA Home), which it isn't.

I've been very worried that if he caught Coronavirus, from one of his Carers at Home, it could prove fatal for him.

His Mother died in December 2008, after developing Pneumonia, after contracting a nasty Virus.

The poor thing, was too frail to fight it, which is a condition Antony is fast approaching.

Hope mods don't mind but below are photos of Antony with his Sister, during happier times, on holiday visiting their Italian Cousins:

large.gallery_2739_1518_347024.jpg.698fc85b902a9d6f7f7a408ac1410b37.jpg     large.gallery_2739_1518_418737.jpg.da5788528c6dea3b9fa7513d1284738a.jpg

Knowing how scared Antony probably feels, upsets me greatly.

But having viewed images of the Care Home online, specialised for caring for sufferers of HD, I think he is in the best place at this worrying time, and I have to console myself with that thought.

Off to bed now, to see how my "ailing" Wife, is getting on.

Regards,

Tom.  :hi:

More and more good news, so fingers crossed.

Although I did note they said around 100 critically ill in 10 hospitals will get it. Doesnt say if all those have COVID, and doesnt say that is the total, but you can probably take a guess that there's at least 100 critical.

Yeah that does kind of suggest that, or maybe that they expect 100 critically ill by next week, which is probably quite likely.

Reading into it a little, the fact it is directly inhaled is something that sounds really good. Hopefully this product can help to reduce the risks. Its doesn't sound like a cure, but it is something that may prevent some people from getting to the really severe stage, and may help to reduce the numbers on ventilation, which has to be a good thing for all concerned!

Also, sounds like it could be ready by next winter:

"Tom Wilkinson, a professor of respiratory medicine at the University of Southampton and the trial’s chief investigator, said if the test goes well, the drug could be generally made available for Covid-19 patients before the end of the year."

This will help in a huge way if we do have a 2nd wave.

Finally some good news today!!

Sharing my birthday with my Son has always been 'challenging' but at least I know he'll remember his 18th (as I do mine for different reasons!) because of Covid-19 and its impacts on footfall at Chester Zoo where he's spent the day!!!

None of the critters were 'self isolating' he was pleased to report!!!

More Animals to see than than the folks there to see them has to be good for your 'Day Out' eh?

Mrs & I took in Hardcastle Craggs for my treat, Blackcaps, Tree Creepers, Blue/Long Tailed/Great tits, Chaffinches,Robins,Jays, Jackdaws,Great Spotted Woodpecker, Dipper, King Fisher, Heron, Deer and Grey Squirrel....... plus Dogs...... and about 5 people..... (oh! and a Troll peeping from behind a Tree my good Wife insists......)

Have a Blessed 'Rest of my Birthday' folks!!!!

I'm sure it was always the plan, teachers brought my sons pack here today cause I'm ill he hasn't been in school, I'm pretty sure everyone will get them Friday.

Well if it was "always the plan" then nobody told me or anyone at my school, nor my wife or anyone at her school. All schools/teachers were asked to prepare for closures, which frankly were inevitable at some point. We were only asked to do this on Tuesday, so activity has been frantic. Our packs, for what limited use they will probably be, went home with the kids this afternoon.

Going to be interesting to see how teaching remotely will work.

Yes my nephew mentioned that , everyone had masks .

Culturally it wasn’t such an issue . Here in Europe I think you’d have been seen as strange at the outset .

USA having a very large increase case increase day as well today, they are now up 2,000 cases. Amazing what happens when you finally start doing a proper amount of tests!

Deaths also up 40 in the USA at the moment, though that may still rise further as the day goes on.

This testing is very important, but it will only become game changing when we have the antibody test that we in the UK are close to. That means a test of who has been infected but recovered even if have shown no symptoms whatsoever.  I said earlier that I think the biggest uncertainty is how many people have been infected by this virus without knowing it.  Get some figures on that and the uncertainty over how we deal with this would reduce significantly.
