There was another country doing some testing with a HIV drug last month, can't remember who.

Still this is good to see and hopefully it proves successful enough that it can be unrolled at some point in the near future.

Fingers crossed. Chloroquine is dirt cheap and the UK has stockpiles. I even have some at home.

Well good luck to you!

I read an article yesterday that said 3000 people were tested in a town in Italy and 50-75% tested positive but had no symptoms.

This matches the data that’s come from the diamond cruise ship where a large proportion (can’t remember figures) also had no symptoms.

While this is good news when considering the death rate, it could be the reason why this virus has spread as rapidly as it has. If 50% of people don’t have symptoms then they will still Be going out spreading it unknowingly.

Hi BB    This is the same point I have been making this morning - but I didn't read your post until just now and I realised you had said the same thing but in a much more succinct fashion!   Good to know this theory is being considered by others because I think it's going to gain traction....

Londoners don't seem to have got the 'social distancing' message

This is not the fault of the commuters who have to go into work to earn a living.

You can't "advise" people to work from home if their employers don't allow that. The authorities need to stop giving wishy washy advice, otherwise you will continue to see people out and about working, shopping and socialising.

Germany up another 510 cases overnight, really taking off over there and getting similar numbers of cases as Spain, though thus far they have been seeming to cope with it ok, but that will obviously only go so far until those numbers start to become unmanageable.

Governments are going to have to borrow a lot of money. From memory, China owns something like 20% of all US debt? There are going to be some interesting questions asked when this all finally ends.

I proposed an idea of seeking some form of compensation from China because of their despicable hygiene practices and trying to hide the problem at initial stage. I am being laughed at in other social groups because of this,as we all buy plenty of Chinese goods. But very few people know how many issues there are with Chinese commodities - agriculture products, I purchase up to 1 million euro worth goods annually from Chinese origin, manage quality of conformance and discuss commodities with world wide suppliers and can tell you Chinese products are very often an issue, likes of pesticides in Goji Berries, illness called Pine mouth from Pine Kernels, lack of prompt product specification availability etc.etc. They must take some form of responsibility of this and we should not forget to push the issue and highlight exact diagnostics

Wow, very good. Not sure about the correlation to ACE-2 receptors and ibuprofen, but it is certianly something that needs to be researched. We do know that ACE-2 receptors are fundemental as an entry point for COV 19 cells. And indeed, we also know that they upregulate to the heart.

Very good theory there.

What are your thoughts on nicotine (just nicotine, not all the other toxic stuff in cigarettes) inhibiting ACE2 receptors? I've definitely research/speculation on that in the science section on reddit.

Cases that are reported have certainly taken a large uptick again in the last 10 days, very clear as well when even the logarithmic graph shows that uptick occurring again, after flattening very nicely between China's slowdown and Europe's blow up

It's remarkable that Germany has so few apparent deaths in relation to the number of cases (Q: Are the case #s really accurate then?). It really sticks out among Spain, France & the USA.

The rest of your post we can push all we like for compensation all we like and they will just say whistle dixie, but they hygiene part from now on is an absolute must, and i mean that, if anything else like this happens again and it can be proven it was as a result of poor food practices and lack of law at government level then yes, certainly economic sanctions and even perhaps military action, but i suspect they will be well aware of this, the one thing the chinese always do is learn, they are great at adapting, yes its too late for many people now including some of their own citizens but i can't think they will be very proud of themselves for this.

With all the usual caveats about inadequate testing, here's the latest map showing total positive cases as a % of population, correct as of 9am today. Iceland still leads the way, at 0.072%, followed by Italy at 0.052% and then many others between 0.01 and 0.05%. The maximum in Iceland was 0.02% on the 12th, so a 3 fold increase in 6 days.
21 countries have a greater density of infections than China, of which 17 are in Europe. However, no country has yet reached level of Hubei Provence, at 0.12%.

I am still working - drove into London today again. Have a hand sanitiser and a bar of soap in the van, and trying to limit my contact with... well, anything and everything.

Today we are replacing some IT infrastructure (a WIFI cable) which in all honesty is only for a reception area that is closed down - so it might not really be that vital. BUT travelling and working in a responsible manner is my only choice until I am certain that isolating at home won’t lead our household into rent arrears.

Bottom line is - can’t work from home ?‍♂️

Good morning, Mark...And well-done you!:oldgood:

I've heard of the Gentleman Farmer class...But the Gentleman Pillock is a new one!

Morning to all . After my marathon day yesterday I was woken to my Youngest coughing uncontrollably and crying at 2 am , My wife ended up sleeping with her in the lounge room fold out bed . She was at the hospital only 11 days ago and was given antibiotics for a chest infection and already had a cough . Now she has completed the course and is coughing more than ever .

So we have a doctors phone appointment but we have had to isolate as a family , I phoned my work to let my team know and they for now have been extremely supportive and have offered to do extra shifts , That’s amazing considering the abuse of the last week .

My fellow managers have also quickly offered support that has made me feel a little Better . But I can’t help but feel so guilty and feel I have let my team down . That feeling obviously might change if I come down with symptoms myself .

My word, just seen Spain's new cases overnight and this morning:

Up 1890!

That would probably put it around Italy's level if we extrapolate that for the rest of the day (as Spain updates throughout the day) probably going to be a 3,000 plus day there. Hopefully Italy finally sees a fall today rather than another day of 3000+. Because we need some good news from somewhere!

Please don't feel guilty. You'd feel much more guilty if you passed on the virus to all of your colleagues. I think staying off is actually the braver thing to do.

Belgium has reported 243 so far, so thats another fairly substainal rise for them as well.

Bangladesh has also recorded its first death.

Think its pretty clear we are now in Europe on the rapid rising part of the bell curve, also worrying signs from elsewhere such as SE that they are starting to get closer to that point as well.

I hear that Trump is planning to send everyone in the US a cheque to help them through this crisis?  if ever there was a typical response from a billionaire, that is it.  Throw money at the problem and it will go away.

What might be a better idea is to issue 'ration' books to everyone for the essentials with a proportion of the vouchers being free.  This would stop people wasting government money on frivolities, booze and betting, and also make sure that nobody was allowed to stock-pile.

Might be worth bringing this in for the UK too as it would get the government money directly to where it is needed most - at the supermarket check-out.

But there's always the possibility that what we're seeing may not turn out to be a Bell curve, at all?

To be fair to him, at least he is actually trying something that will help everyone if things get tight, I wouldn't be against our government doing something that can reduce the burden of cost on people, whether it be through things like cancelling council tax (the government can foot the bill for a while I'd have thought) and raising SSP drastically, but clearly a great many are going to be pushed to their utter limits with this.

I've been saying ever since last Saturday Spain was the one to watch, because they were breaking away from their normal curve and lurched upwards suddenly. If we see that happen here, begin to get ready for things to head south within the week. for now though, we are following broadly the same curve as most other countries.

Spanish rate of increase is actually worse than any country including Italy, the 1st-5th, 5th-10th were above 400% and the 10th-15th above 350%. US is second.

UK is is a little above Italy and France, tracking similar to Germany.
