Serbia has just shut down all schools, universities and other gatherings - with only 48 cases!

Meanwhile the UK is out here with thousands and we only learned to wash our hands to Happy Birthday?

Hmmm... Like France. A different story from Italy. Don't want to create more fear mongering, but does anyone think there is a different strain in these countries to Italy that is dangerous to younger people?

The media really doesn’t like good news.  What about all those who have had it and recovered such as David and Sally Able.  Obviously nothing worse than a good news story in their books. Ok this all awful but have some perspective please.

i only smoke a few a day but at night i smoke more with a pint or two

i know it's going to be hard to quit but it will at least give me a better chance of surviving this virus.

No 1 or 2 fags a day and always with a few tinnies on a night, i never have the urge to have one until i have a can

Evidence from SE Asia today suggests it can still spread around in very humid and hot conditions. Malaysia has had 280 cases today, most from a religious gathering that has been community spread.

This suggests this won't ease over summer.

The coronavirus epidemic in the UK will last until next spring and could lead to 7.9m people being hospitalised - Public Health England briefing for senior NHS officials obtained by Guardian.

It suggests as many as 80% of Britons becoming infected with the virus over that time.

7.9 million will not be hospitalized... because there isn't enough space for 7.9 million in hospital. I'd have been surprised if 1 million could be accommodated. It's not as if other things like heart attacks are going to stop happening!

As much as that's an unhappy statistic, the article also says:

"The specialist explains that it also regularly occurs with regular flu that younger people end up in intensive care. "You can see that with the flu: those people get serious double-sided pneumonia." In addition, the elderly also choose not to be treated in intensive care."

And another snippet which I haven't heard much about:

"The average age of all covid-19 ic patients in Lombardy, Italy, was 70 years, according to which 'the main risk factor for ic uptake is obesity'."

No, probs because (from my experience of working in Netherlands 80’s to 2000’s), the young smoked more than  a fleet full of Manx kippers,  so check the lungs,...,

No I think its the same in Italy, they are having to chose who to treat, hence the older dying.

It'd be interesting to find out how many of those (and those without 'underlying' conditions) are smokeing cigs/weed/vape etc

Personally I'd assume vaping would make something like this worse, as your literally inhaling water into your lungs which are already having problems with fluid retention....

It suggests as many as 80% of Britons becoming infected with the virus over that time.

80% is probably their top end figure based on what Prof Whitty said the other day.

18 months would be about right, and that is at an average of 100,000 new cases a day!

That would be a hospitalisation rate of 15% of those infected.

Now, if you strip out the under 30's (about 30% of the population) and over 70's (10%) cos they are all isolated, then you are looking at  8 million of the remaining 30-70 y.o's being hospitialised, assuming an 80% infection rate, that is 1 in 4 people!  If i was a 40 year old school teacher, bus driver etc, i'd not be overly impressed about that!  Now it will not cut as cleanly as that, we have to assume the over 50's are going to be hit badly.

5000 ventilators?

It’s likely to be some computer modeling like the French report which shocked me . And has likely laid out the worst case scenario .

I’ve decided to just see what transpires because a lot can happen re anti virals , vaccines etc .

Just as we’ve been shocked by the spread we might get another more positive shock over the coming months .

Things are very bleak now but we mustn’t give up hope that we might turn the corner sooner.

Nothing sells like bad news after all!

Still, it is sobering that we could be looking at hundreds of thousands of deaths by next year. That's basically Spanish influenza / Ww2 level fatalitiesnfor this country.

First of all, leaks are not always 100% accurate, secondly, I'm pretty sure that whoever leaked this went with a worse case scenario doc, so if it is accurate, it may not be what happens, there will be many docs around giving different turn outs for different tactics.
