Passed a minor milestone today. There have now been more cases outside of China than within.

Also, it was only 9 days back that we passed 100k total. We'll finish today at close to 170k. So, 200k on Tuesday? 500k before months end?

Me too, Nick...

Selfish scumbags?

The mums were refilling their bottles from our dispenser at the school I work last week!

No l,ve been closing my business, raided our stock cupboard, being in hospitality I have plenty of loo roll and cleaning products in stock

So sorry to read this beatpete. I feel for you, if this wasn’t a planned choice.
My son is a fine dining chef and, having built a good reputation as a young head chef, started his own business 4 months ago. It’s was all going very well but today was the first drop in business and next Sunday (Mothering Sunday and would expect to be totally packed out for two lunchtime sittings) is now getting cancellations.
It’s an anxious time for so many of us, for all sorts of reasons.

Car factories to build ventilators. How long would it take to kit them out. Would 3D printers been any use?.

You could get the private sector to undergo testing in the community to keep the contain strategy going as part of the fight against the virus .

This means you don’t put more demands on the NHS in terms of tests .

But you can help the NHS by identifying where clusters might pop up , this gives them some warning and will help them in terms of resource management.

This isn’t rocket science !

My view is that the NHS should make available testing for more. In real terms its not a great drain on resources, especially when it might reduce pressure on beds and equipment by early intervention.

At least they don’t necessarily have to look beautiful.  Just work.

Ariana Grande on her Instagram story about the coronavirus: "I keep hearing from a surprising amount of statements like "this isn't a big deal" and "we'll be fine"... "we still have to go about our lives" and it's really blowing my mind.

I understand that's how you felt weeks ago. But please don't turn a blind eye.

It is incredibly dangerous and selfish to take this situation that lightly. The "we will be fine because we're young" mindset is putting people who aren't young and/or healthy in a lot of danger. You sound stupid and privileged and you need to care more about others. Like now"

Someone posted earlier about test kits being released soon. Wonder if the main pharmacies, like Lloyds P, will be drafted in to provide the service?

It's odd, a Friend usually NHS admin was sent on training to staff the drive through test centres that opened last week, then they closed them the following day, no plans to use atm, all to be done in hospital now they were told, wonder if they decided against having as too risky....

Scary numbers in Italy.

3,590 infected with 368 dead today alone.

Also with a 7.3% death rate.

Given that this virus attacks the lungs, it is worth noting that around 25% of Italians smoke, compared to around 14% in the UK.

Could this explain the high Italian death rate?

I'm curious as to what kind of ventilators Mr Hancock is thinking they will build?

Is he thinking simple mechanical ones?

The life critical ones a hospital uses to keep a patient on life support 24/7 will presumably require specific integrated circuits and other components, no doubt made in South Korea.

It's also worth nothing in Italy that the worst of the cases are mainly in the north. Some regions in the south have very low numbers of confirmed cases.

Some very concerning news from France .

Apart from the increase in deaths from 91 to 120.

Cases up 900 to 5400.

Doctors over recent days have noticed an increase in severe illness amongst those 30 and over who had no underlying conditions .

In the company of the Health Minister in Brazil, Bolsonaro was greeting supporters, taking selfies with them and shaking their hands.

The 7th member of his delegation just tested positive for the coronavirus.

It was a few days back, so things may have changed, but the gender demographics for covid-19 mortalities and for smoking in Italy back then did seem suggestive of a link.

Yep while the risks for young people is low, 1 in 50 or so will get a severe case and that becomes a significant number when you have thousands of cases.

Not good.

I'm feeling better after a tearful conversation with OH. We have resolved ourselves that if he can't get here next weekend that we will just wait it out until he can.

Still baffled as to what's open and what's shut!

Do they smoke or vape?

From a quick Google,  28% of French people smoke.

I'm wondering whether this could be contributing.
