Don’t worry, the coldies will still ignore anything chilly or below average for the time of year, and still tell us that May 2020 was a wonderful month.

A bit like how you ignore anything warm, sunny and above average for the time of year and still tell us what an awful month it was...

Because more often than not, we have to put up with longer periods of cloudy days, and damp conditions. Despite a milder nighttime low, or slightly warmer than average temps during the day.

Anyway, let’s agree to disagree.

2 seasons in the Lake District, the wet season, mid May to mid February, the dry season mid Feb - mid May, we've had weeks and weeks of dry weather here, better make the most of the next 2 weeks then..

Lovely few days coming up with low 20s.

Already 16-17 degrees in parts of the SE and feeling pleasant. But UV levels seem unusually high, which has been a common occurrence during spring.

Its quite noteworthy how the sunniest April on record has coincided with a period when there has been very little aircraft about - contrails building into cloud, also less pollution, air cleaner. More than coincidence I wonder?

April 1991-2020 average high is now 15.0c, up from 14.2c in the 1981-2010 series.

By far the fastest warming month.

The atlantic appears to collapse by April in recent years, not sure what is causing this.. hence all the anticyclonic conditions we seem to get nowadays, hardly April showers either. Northern blocking in some years the culprit. This year though we didn't have any northern blocking and on paper probably should have been far more unsettled than it was with the PV still reigning supreme.

There's a few moans and groans in model thread because there's no heatwave showing, I think some moan at lack of excessive heat like they moan at lack of cold in winter.

I'm more than happy to sit in garden at 19'c as long as sun is shining, it doesn't have to be plumes of heat coming up from Spain for me.

Agree, best we can hope for in May is settled dry weather - which in the main is what is on offer, though could be rather cloudy after tomorrow for quite some time. The true heat an wait until later June and through July - best time for it. High teens in May is very respectable.

Yes good post. Pleasantly warm like that is good enough for me. The strength of the sun makes all the difference at this time of year. Each to their own as I don't want to begrudge heat fans some interest but high 20s upwards isn't something I get excited about. I don't find it nice to sit outside in. But in the shade though with an ice cold beverage is ok.

High teens in May is about average. Not unusual to have 27c days in May  - most years see 26c.

The next few days look cold (12-15c) but still with some sun, before it warms up again to average or above.

May never outperforms its average in the way that April, June, July and August can.

It really doesn't amount to much this up coming cold/colder spell as this warm period currently experiencing will do just as much for the CET as next week will for cold. Next week looks sunny and with the strength of the sun at this time of year you can guarantee some of the 'colder' days won't be far off normal (particularly in the south) - this has been the way for the last number of years - warm periods more than off-set the colder ones (when they do pop up, which is not often) but not a guarantee.

Another beautiful warm day here. 24°C ☀️

The colder air filtering down from the north now, although it looks like London could still reach 18°C tomorrow before it's arrival down here. Chillier Monday onwards..

Yes, it's looking like another warmish day in the south (albeit not as warm as the last few days), with it not turning colder until the evening.

By the sounds of it, we're going back to drought conditions again...

All the hallmarks are there again, either high pressure to the north of us or over us or strong enough to the west or east...Atlantic has gone absolutely AWOL again and to think we had nothing but the Atlantic bar a few blips from October through to early March. Though with all that rain you'd think the reservoirs should be amply topped up to cope with any drought this summer.

Very odd day today. 19C by 12PM; it's already 16C. By 3PM the temperature is 14C and by 6PM it's 9C. So a 10c temperature drop in 6 hours

This is so similar to the VE day weekend in 1995, except there was no thunder or rain on the cool down then. Warm Saturday, airmass change Sunday, damn chilly on the Monday (which was the BH that time, if it had been the Friday would have been much nicer weather).

Lovely and cool out there today, sch a refreshing change from the monotony of "Warm Sunshine" of the last week or so.  Hoping to get a decent night's sleep tonight.

Liking the looks of BBCs forecast, they're showing 22c here for next week.

What a difference a day makes, quite an unusual temperature drop for the UK.

From 25°C to a wind chill of 3°C in 24 hrs. It's bitterly cold out there.
