No one can complain about the boring winter weather today at least!  I think we just had the squall line pass through - the sky darkened rapidly followed by a period of intense sideways rain as the wind speed also picked up.  10 minutes or so later and the rain is still quite heavy but the sky is a little ligher again.   The wind is still whipping down the valley - must be 40-50 mph sustained - and the trees are still swaying quite violently.  Although the wind continues to be very strong and gusty I am now hopeful that the worst is over and things will very gradually calm down over the next few hours.

Heavy rain and hail right now winds eased off.

Looks like the main squall has passed. Still very windy with rain but the really intense gusts and precipitation has cleared east and temperatures are dropping like a stone.

At the height of the squall there was hail, sleet and a few thuds of wet snow in amongst the rain. Fun times!

Will this part of the squall line strengthen?

Got to say, another one that has been overhyped because it was affecting south of the border. Had worse plenty of times and there's never even been as much as a mention of a warning.

Update on Burgh Le Marsh windmill pretty devastating damage but sums up the county’s damage since the early hours of the morning here in Lincolnshire.

I don't understand your post? No amber further north for the wind - understandable as the highest gusts are south of the border like you say.

How can you judge the impacts further south if you're not there experiencing them? There's been a gust of 86mph at Manchester Airport as part of a long and very intense squall line which is causing damage to property, combined with many area experiencing copious amounts of rain in a short space of time with flash flooding. Hardly overhyped.

The amber warning is easily justified IMO. I think you've contradicted yourself in your post, with all due respect

That was vicious drive home.

Amazed to see the amount of cars piling into the City Centre to go shopping.....

I think they'll be in for a shock when that cold front comes in here in a couple of hours.

It was stated on the BBC forecast earlier in the week that England had an amber warning because it was not used to such high wind speeds whereas Scotland was, which is true. At the time of the forecast they were predicting 80-90mph+ across the west coast of Scotland, which isn't out of the ordinary on the coast in the course of a winter. The Amber Warning for south of the border is purely down to impact with their being a higher population.

The owners of 2 houses that have had trees fallen on em around here might think otherwise.

Earlier data at the time showed the potential severe gusts penetrating inland Scotland, too. As we got closer to the main event forecasts refined to a focus on England & Wales. Are you saying the storm was overhyped for Scotland?

Maybe initially, but all the forecast outlets I've viewed have correctly backed down from anything too severe there

Looks like the crew of UAE17 have given up landing at MAN after two go-around's and are diverting to AMS instead.

The squall line that passed through was phenomenal, the intensity of the rain was incredible with the gustiness. Best squall line event for some years

Took video footage of it, not sure it does it justice

I don't know, comes across as being pretty vigorous!
