To be honest this can be expected. The last time we had a proper Amber wind warning was the St Judes Storm. I say proper because we had an Amber wind warning in Doris but the text was only 55-60 mph for North London, not 60-70 widely.

Storm Ciara will bring very strong winds and potentially some disruption to travel throughout Sunday.

What to expect

• Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible
• Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
• Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
• Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
• Some roads and bridges may close
• Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage

Reason for update

The warning has been updated to increase the likelihood of impacts. The warning is also now only for Sunday.

Strong winds will be widespread and last throughout much of Sunday. Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are likely across many inland areas and around 70 mph in coastal areas. There is a small chance of even stronger winds across parts of Scotland, potentially 70 to 80 mph. However, it is currently very uncertain whether the wind will reach this strength here and when this will occur. A spell of heavy rain will also affect many regions for a time, making driving conditions particularly poor.

What I have to say I dont understand why the train companies are getting such a hammering. Obviously you would expect there to be speed restrictions on the network. Some people seem to forget the 23rd december storm 2013 which reduced the network to zero trains and the subsequent valentines day storm again zero trains. 

The speed restrictions are needed to make sure no one is injured from debris

Long time lurker on here.

 I'm due to be out and about tomorrow morning  ( midlands area / Nottingham/Derby Leicester) and in a few exposed places ie hilltops, and possibly a rooftop, helping to put up an aerial/wifi thingy. been told to "take these warnings of doom with a pinch of salt as they never happen, see you tomorrow as planned at 9am, bring a coat as there may be a few rain showers"

This is the problem with the trash headlines from the Daily Express, when an event comes along that does actually warrant concern, some are willing to dismiss it as hyperbole still because they just assume its another Daily Express forecast. It's worrying.

This has confused me too. Sean Batty mentioned the possibility of a sting jet formation so maybe they’re waiting till nearer the time to issue an amber?

Well I wouldn’t advise going onto any roof tops tomorrow. With gusts over 60mph you wouldn’t be long on there long.....

EURO4 finally siding with ECM/GFS regarding inland gusts and then raising it - even inland spots touching 80mph + the Gloucester area looks around 90mph!

Might as well save your breath. I had an argument on here over somebody else who was putting themselves and others at risk when storms were predicted. They came back abusive so I had to block them.

Good job it isn't Monday would be expected to turn into work.and be told off if I didn't.
