But @Kirkcaldy Weather (and just for balance!) it was hotter at the start of the Cretaceous Period!

2020 has set a new record for November, according to NASA GISS data. A remarkable achievement, given we're in a La Nina. Goes to show the growing power of Arctic Amplification.

What are we supposed to expect when we are told that the Arctic Ocean is now taking up huge amounts of energy each year that then needs shedding before refreeze can begin?

We could be looking at a small Niño's worth of energy pouring into the Arctic atmosphere each & every autumn from now on!

The last 'Super Nino' was aided & abetted by such a wallop of energy

Looks like the Arctic added around 0.15C to the global anomaly this month, enough to take it from 3rd to 1st warmest.
0.15C doesn't seem like much but it's impressive for an area that represents just 4% of the Earths surface.

This is what folk have to grapple with themselves?

That is a rude amount of energy that can now near be relied upon to pour into the Arctic Atmosphere prior to refreeze?

It must have some large, but predictable, 'general impacts' on weather/climate around the N. Hemisphere (& then globally) each Autumn/early winter?

This isn't good either!

A key measure of the amount of global warming so far has been revised up to 1.07°C, suggesting humanity is even closer to breaching the goal of keeping warming below 1.5°C

It would be interesting to see a graph showing temperature anomaly at different latitudes plotted alongside each other, spanning a number of years, but longer the better. Or.. since the Arctic region seems to be the standout 'hotspot' for obvious reasons , a line graph plotting Arctic region anomaly v Global anomaly.

The GISS page allows you to look at those latitude plots for different years

For the Arctic vs the rest of the world:

I made this little animation showing how different climate warming trends in the CET area looks when using daily data, compared to monthly and then annual. The difference is kinda startling.
Daily: the warming trend is visible, but not very distinctive
Monthly: a clear warming trend, especially in winter
Annual: a startlingly clear warming trend

I think it's quite obvious what the future holds for Earth's global surface temps, as a whole... Up and up and up -- until the lunatics lose control of the asylum:

Anybody thinking we might see a global temp record this, or next, year should El Nino take hold?

We've already seen record SST's even though we were at the tail end of 3 years of La Nina & that heat will be pouring into the Atmosphere above....add in a Nino plume & I reckon we might well see the record fall?

Probably next if El Niňo takes hold though there are still some who thinks there will be no El Niňo this year (and next).
