Utterly nondescript, both milder and wetter than average, but not record-breakingly so...

5.9C and 101mm please

Looks like FINALLY the atmosphere over the NH is changing as we head towards February, so I'm not going mild again.

2.1c

67mm

Another divergence between methods but I will go for 5.4C. A more settled month like January but mainly to the south and east.

For the boffins with the data which years had a December exceeding 5.4, a January exceeding 5.9 but a February below 3.4.

Optimistic I know.

Based on your Jan & Feb criteria alone, the only years I can see where Jan > 5.9 and Feb < 3.4 are 1682, 1736, 1875, 1932 and 1983.  Dec 1931 was 5.3 which is close... Dec 1735 was 5.4 - I think that's the closest example but hopefully someone more familiar with the data can confirm.

Do you think we may be in for a cold early spring going by your methods?

Going by an analogue average yes, the highest confidence.

Going by the only two analogues (1975 and 2012) to be mild so far you get a cool February but March diverges. 1975 was cold, 2012 was very warm.
