So they should just let people lose their homes ! Making a bad situation even worse.

A few months of suspension I don’t think will sink Italian banks and I’m sure the government thought of this before putting in this measure .

The Italian banks simply don't have any reserves and rely on a constant flow of new cash when that dries up people will find out there savings are really just gone.

One " positive" note, Italy doesn't have pension reserves (unlike eg. Here in the Netherlands where you safe during your productive years )either and relies on the young to sustain the pensions of an ever aging population

China's latest update shows just 19 new cases all but 2 are in Wuhan

The mainland has had 80,754 confirmed cases and 3,136 deaths since the outbreak began at the end of last year

If that new case number is reliable, then that is a remarkable level given where they were a month ago. Far as i am concerned, containment of something this contagious should be near impossible, but China, could be coming close, astonishing if so.

Switzerland now just under 500 cases. Do they update once or twice a day?

Sweeby, what Korea and china have done is monumental, it really does show the super tight measurements required can bring it under control, something perhaps European countries need to take a close look at. Maybe we might just have to stomach such measures for a month or two to drive it down in totality.

Sadly this is down to the people being used to being 'owned' by the state and doing what they're told.  That level of containment would be difficult, if not impossible in the UK and many 'free' countries

As I posted up thread 'safe distance' is not what W.H.O./C.M.O. are advising but at least TWICE that distance?

Health authorities advise people to stay 1-2 metres apart, but researchers found that a bus passenger infected fellow travellers sitting 4.5 metres away.

Ohh strange moment when i saw who posted that.   anyway  that really as peaked my interest    7 days time  we could be in lock down ourselves

I'd not be too worried just yet. If you look at western Europe daily numbers Vs Italy for same day since case X then they are all a bit erratic to 400 but then italy, France, Germany and Spain all seemed to lose it and start jumping by hundred plus (Germany seems a little tighter) at the same rate ish.

If we can get past 500 at our current rate we should be on track to come in lower.

We also have the benefit that if Italy actually get a grip we know what needs to be done.

It’s better to get the pubic onside by instilling a sense of collective spirit and we’re in this together.

In China they’ve also started a programme where anything seen as not confirming and being classed as a trouble maker means you lose points . A trouble maker being anyone who criticizes the government .

Which in turn means , less access to welfare , less housing and less chance of visas to leave the country .

They just want a nation of Borg drones !

On Friday I said if we can get to Wednesday with 400 cases then we are in a good position. Barring a ridiculous jump today we are on the right track and don't necessarily have to follow the Italy trend (2 weeks behind) as long as we continue with the correct measures.

The government did the correct thing in implementing a technocracy, Boris has stepped back and is letting the team of experts come to the front and make decisions based on both evidence and experience.

Good idea, as long as they are humane with it and have had contact with other governments and sort the logistics out so people are not left shafted.

Certainly interesting to see how different countries are handling this, you've got Israel dropping the hammer quite hard, whilst we have not done a bean on that front yet have a much higher case total.

I suppose history will show what was the correct approach.

Italy heading 100% for recession, given they had a fall in Q4, its just how deep it will go and whether it will drag the rest of Europe into recession as well (IMO, highly probable).

I hope you will all enjoy this video as much as I did - I think it will cheer us up amid all the bad news being spread around but there's a serious message in there too, with which I completely agree.

I think so now. I've offered to do their shopping for them and theres a game on the xbox we've been enjoying together lately so they're looking forward to having the extra time to play that.

edit: Friend number 2 also asked to self isolate.

Seeing as all winter I'm generally 'self isolated' it will be of interest to find how others deal with such?

Obviously a 'healthy' amount of distraction from T' tinterweb is essential (seeing as I've 'done' the TV?) and keeping up muscle tone via turning every trip into multiple trips (esp. 'stairs'..... why go up just the once when you can do it 3 times?)

Plus, Joy of Joy's, it's 'Spring' so plenty of skirting/doors to clean , cobwebs to remove, under sofa's to clean etc,etc.....

But let me know how week 2 has you eh?
