Breaking: The Netherlands have reported 121 new cases and 1 new death

Total to 503 cases and 5 deaths

If we look at other countries in the EU, then surely the UK should be experiencing higher #s than being currently reported.

If today's increase in ~50 again then something's not right in terms of testing.

If we can keep the new cases to under 80 today I think we can all deem that good news.

A 3 figure increase will cause more public panic and move the governments plans forward.

The problem is even if it’s 80 that’s because they’ve not increased testing by much if at all.

They haven’t been testing anyone so far without some direct link which means community transmission is hard to gage .

He should stay home. You really can't depend on other people being hygienic or even knowing they are infected

I think this would be striking a balance regarding schools - maybe allow at risk groups some time away - if required - but then how long is long enough?

I don’t have a problem with that . I’m happy to see restrictions to get the virus spread under control .

True. From what i've seen/read people who have been 'diagnosed' (loose term  in this context) via  nhs111, havent even been tested. So, assuming those people take the advice and strictly self-isolate, then maybe that is another factor in UK small numbers (comparatively), as well as poss 000s not even being tested.

they dont though..its mostly because during the summer more people spend more time outside and not stuck in doors in close proximity to each other...schools also close during the summer as do a lot of sporting events like the football and rugby seasons where big crowds gather

It's all very well saying "close schools" to protect rhe children and the adults they'd come into contact with, but does anyone in here really believe their parents would then self-isolate them? Course they wouldnt. They'd be going around to friends' houses, in an even smaller confined space than a school. Maybe take them to a softplay, to the cinema, to the Wild Place, the zoo....the list is endless of places they'd be taken to socialise.

Going out on their own the older school children would be off to the shopping mall, the cinema, the city centre, McDonalds, blah, blah.

Get real guys.

Not all parents - my 13 year old understands why my company has asked us to work from home and doesn't understand why the schools aren't doing more.

But yes, some parents wouldn't care and would happily let their little darlings run loose.

Just bumping this as i believe it is very useful.

Might be an idea for Mods to continue to bump it or pin the link somewhere?

Thanks @swebby. I've posted it twice now in the last couple of days as I thought it was extremely helpful and so far only a couple of posters have made any comment amidst the constant churn of incoming posts.  Which may in itself be an indication that the advice really is needed......

Seems odd that Plymouth is a little oasis currently. Devon is a hotspot and Cornwall has a few.

I dont believe that for a second we've none.

I work at a large NHS Trust in London, and a colleague of mine took a phone call from a member of the public, making a complaint because they were tested for coronavirus a couple of days ago, was told the results would be back in 2-3 days, rang up today for the results, only to be told their samples (it was for his partner too) had been sent to the wrong lab for testing and would have to wait a further week for the results.  Now, if it is only 2 samples that have gone to the wrong place, fair enough - but what if 100's or even 1000's have all gone to the wrong lab and the results won't be known for another 7 days?

If schools close, but cinemas and soft plays were not, that would not be joined up thinking and i hope/expect it this will have been assessed by the government?  If schools close, then i'd expect other things that would be regarded as high risk to also be shut down.  We will have to wait and see i guess.

In terms of epidemiology, a carrier interacting with a few friends in a house, compared to a few hundred in a school communal area are entirely different things. The first may result in a single cluster, the second risks the possibility of multiple clusters.

Yep good idea this time, and also try and find a quiet time if possible, although turn out is much bigger for your elections

I wouldn’t be surprised at that figure or perhaps lower. Given the turnaround I think we might be seeing a lag of a couple of days.

for perspective we may very well get some scary looking increases by the weekend as I suspect our numbers might start to catch up to other countries as testing becomes more extensive.

not a bad guess, 83.

Realistically we are going to see 3 figures increases soon, but the longer we can delay it then the better shape we will be in moving into the next phase of the plan.

Sorry If I get a little heated at times, apologies to anyone I am rude to.

They dont stop entirely, but they are greatly reduced. Warmer temps, increased UV, plus the points you make, add up to a marked reduction in spreading
