Interesting SS. ITV lunchtime news today were 'rumouring' a significant UK spike announcement sometime today. Maybe that is why announcement not yet made.

Gene sequencing by Beijing Ditan Hospital found coronavirus in the cerebrospinal fluid of a 56-year-old confirmed #COVID19 patient with encephalitis, which provides evidence that COVID19 can invade patients’ nervous systems, just like SARS and MERS.

Appears that this virus can cause you to collapse after all.

But many many things can cause you to collapse? Several common viruses can cause encephalitis, let alone god knows how many other illnesses or conditions that people collapse from. Just because someone has collapsed, doesnt mean that have COVID.

Go back just 2 months. There'd be millions in the UK alone coughing or sneezing etc. You wouldn't batter an eyelid at it. Now, I bet theres lots of people panicking at the thought of someone near them just coughing. Same with collapsing. Suddenly people notice these things and video it, when they probably wouldnt have before.

I do not know about you but the 'mixed messages' we are receiving it makes trying to stay clear of the virus doubly difficult?

As noted above with the viruses longevity on hard surfaces we are also seeing number of bits of 'advice' on how far the spread of the virus once atomised?

Our Govt. advice is the same as for Flu (a physically 'larger' beastie?) that it can spread up to 3 ft

The 'Wuhan whistleblower' told us double that a 6 ft?

& I linked to the U.S. Coronavirus Specialist who tells us 9 ft?

Do we do as our govt. is doing and 'plan for the worst whilst hoping for the best'?

The what of this discrepancy in the period we are infectious?

From suspected infection we are told to 'Self Isolate' for 14 days but for those confirmed with the virus & declared cured there is no 'self isolation' even though we know we shed the virus once cured?

I'm beginning to think there may be an amount of 'Chocolate Fireguard' to what we are being advised and it is merely in place to avoid public panic for as long as possible? (by which time 'they' hope folk will be too scared to cause issues?)

Hi G-W, think this depends on what you think the governments primary motive is - Containment? Control/Management?

If you think they still believe than can contain and avoid an epidemic then the mixed messages do seem confusing.

If you think they have given up the ghost on containment being possible, then their message makes more sense.  Telling people to maintain 9ft distances is impractical and may also scare the crap out of some. IMO, this is the government (and the WHO) gently training people on what to do when the outbreak hits the control phase while minimising everyday disruption.

Whats the problem? The number of cases or the fact they arent going to waste time giving locations every day?

The latter it is not a waste a time, would heighten peoples preparedness. Bad move.

Just had a text from local doctors giving information on COVID. Have you been abroad and have concerns etc, go online or call 111, dont not visit GP, Hospital etc. Usual good advice, but nice to know they're getting the info out to as many as possible.

You what? What use exactly would giving locations do? Unless you give out names and addresses, its a complete waste of time to update it every day.

It either causes hypochondriac panic in the named locations, or complacency in locations that arent listed!

If the government contingency plan is to contain this as much as possible then surely it would be prudent for people to avoid areas when they become problematic?

Its nice to know the locations if you have an elderly relative to make sure they aren't going near any hotspots. Hopefully the authorities would alert you anyway if it was nearby.

Well people have already said they are pulling their kids out of school. If I were a parent I would do the same now. If you don't know where the virus is then you have to assume it's everywhere. Lack of information will always lead to people jumping to conclusions. Simple as that.

Strongly disagree. Also to me it suggests an air of defeat, therefore treating it like it is everywhere, to me that causes more anxiety. For city dwellers maybe it is not necessary as we assume it is among us, but for those that live in small towns etc more likely to be caught out unprepared. I don’t understand why they won’t disclose this information they’re doing it in other countries with much higher cases. The public should be informed but of course fears of upsetting order is more important.

So, if a person in your area was diagnosed with it and 3 days before the announcement he or she had visited their local tesco express, would you decide not to go to that shop for a week or something?

Kids are grubby little germ collectors spreading various illnesses about the place.

You are quite correct, and throw in the fact we are a cultural melting pot these days, over 50 languages are spoken in the communities around here alone, people forever flying here there and everywhere to see family and friends, parents not wishing to have time off to look after sick kids and 'hoping for the best' and sending them in.

Some small perspective.

A few years back I was waiting at pre-school for the afternoon session to start outside, and quite loudly, a parent was having a go at her son because he had been sick again and the school had to ring her and she had to come out of work. She actually said 'How dare you get me out of work being sick again?' she was shouting so loudly i can still remember it. Yes that's right, he had a tummy bug and she still dragged him to school.

Now imagine that tummy bug had been this virus?

yeah.

I think you'll find you can 'figure' just where those areas are yourself by looking at 'population densities'?

Just a quick question  the latest jump n figures today as been around 50% ish ( of the amount that had the virus yesterday)    can we expect this rate to continue  ie  Thursdays update to be around  160 infected?.   or is that to basic.

If it had not been deep cleaned then probably yes i would steer clear. Surely people should be allowed to make educated choices.

But you're all missing the point.

If an area becomes a hotspot, and hundreds are infected, then obviously yes, and I'm sure the government would make that clear. If someone at a school got it, then the school would let the relevant staff and pupils know.

If one patient is tested positive in a particular town, what then? You dont go to that town? If you're that worried about this, then you shouldnt be going out at all, no mater what, surely?

What about if someone in that Tesco Express had been sick a week ago? Or how about someone suffered a heart attack? Alternatively, why not just lock yourself away?
