We keep seeing video of fully protected people wandering about spraying aimlessly roads and other places.  Strikes me as a complete waste of time and sanitiser if that is what is being used. Ponder if it just a PR exercise.

Completely wrong.

Coronavirus can cause a Cytokine Storm within the body. You're not doing star jumps after that.

No, I’m not and the myth has been de-bunked a number of times.  Its sensationalist reporting and quite frankly shameful.

I’m aware of the Cytokine effects, but only applicable if you’re already dying.  You certainly weren’t doing star jumps before that or walking about the streets either!

Lets try and keep to the facts in this thread please.

Not being funny, but my quotes are peer reviewed from virologists, they are not sensationalist or have been debunked and are certainly not shameful.

If I'd have quoted the Sun or the Express, you'd have a point, but you don't.

Someone in hubs company in London, has been tested positive. They had just come back from Japan. Hubs has a training meeting in a couple of weeks and suffers from breathing issues at times.

People will do what they want. I say it was stupidity to travel, others will say it is freedom of choice. Probably even went into work thinking it was a heavy cold.

You can have films telling people to wash their hands, how to put a tissue in a bin, - but just like the people here who wear flipflops driving and will think they will never be to blame for an accident, how many will go on their merry little way thinking 'on it won't happen to me' or 'it's just a cold'

According to the symptoms, you can be infected but mildly.  I carried swine flu to hubs we think when I was pregnant, how many could just be carriers?

How I see it, all this 'worry' about climate change and the death of humanity, when it could be just a virus that could wipe us out far quicker.

Exactly the point i have always made, plus as well there are people in the world who have the will to design one as well, they only have to get lucky once.

Eh?

Statement:

Quote

People don’t collapse in the streets because of Coronavirus

Argument:

Quote

In most moribund patients, 2019-nCoV infection is also associated with a cytokine storm. (Can make you collapse)

Coronavirus also crosses the blood/brain barrier preventing you from breathing. (Can make you collapse)

Conclusion:

You can collapse in the street from the Coronavirus.

No I haven't - it's more curiosity than anything. I don't want to take away medical resources from those in need. Definitely wasn't a cold though, I would put my mortgage on it - it was nothing like a cold in-fact.

If they do want people to test though I would be more than happy.

Same here although mine was ages ago and unlikely to be the virus, unless it's been about since late September. Sore throat, no runny nose what so ever, dry cough, weakness, fast breathing rapid heart rate, doctor thought before the ecg which was normal but fast, that my heart was causing the cough. It wasn't thank goodness.

Thankfully the real medical experts are saying sensible stuff. Dr Hilary on Lorraine said current medical and government guidelines are absolutely right at this time. You can never say you wont contract it, but lessen the risk to exposure by being sensible and hygienic. I'm sure we've all digested yesterday's official advice.

As for stopping people come in and out of the UK? I think you need to get out of your bubble(s).

I think you’re either trying to get yourself out of a hole or you’re not understanding come of the technical aspects of this.

A ‘cytokine storm’ could happen in moribund cases - that is people that are critically ill and dying.

I don’t think it’s sensible to suggest that critically ill, or dying persons are likely to be walking the streets.  Certainly not in any great numbers.

Therefore to suggest that people will be collapsing in the streets due to Coronavirus is not correct.

I collapsed in the street because of flu, somewhere around 2014or2015 can't remember when, that's how I ended up in hospital with it.

I've just been to numerous shops in various areas, and know sanatiser at all. Apparently boots are limiting the sale of these items to 2 a person now. Folks are basically buying up stock and selling them for a fortune.. Just spoke to a local who has seen  a carex hand gel... Not sure where from, being sold for 25 quid for a small one... It stated but free delivery!!! The bloke said.... Free delivery!!! I would want a free Netflix subscription thrown in for that price!! Had to laugh. Its a crazy world out there, people just go mad, and human nature just says.... Sod everyone else, just keep myself safe.

It is interesting.

I went to London on December 21st (Winter Wonderland - Hyde Park) and mingled with tourists from all over the world.

On December 23rd, i developed pain in my ribs on one side which kind of felt like I had been punched there or bruised. I thought it was very strange.

Within 3-4 hours, my whole body felt like that. My bones hurt. My headache was absolutely crushing and I quickly developed the most nasty dry racking cough I've ever had. Nose was fine, throat was fine, just the cough.

Christmas eve I woke up absolutely soaked to the bone with sweat after a fitful night of fever dreams.

That actually sounds a lot like influenza, especially the 3-4 hrs from first symptoms to being an utter mess, but the reasonably quick recovery suggests either something else, or that you are an extremely healthy individual.  NB - Influenza does not tend to cause the very sore throat or the nasal waterworks that people experience with common colds.

What did your partner think it was? Being a nurse she would probably be well trained to spot the difference between flu and heavy colds.

There was a bug doing the rounds globally around Christmas that was being described as a flu like illness. It did for the England cricket team in South Africa, and also the Kiwi cricket team touring Australia. Also struck down a number of the south African players by the end of the series.

I'm definitely not particularly healthy haha. I'm thin (owing to metabolism rather than diet) in my mid-thirties as of next week and I smoke. It did surprise me how quickly I got better because when I get normal colds, it seems to take me an absolute age to shake them off and yes, absolutely no sinus problems or sore throat, just the hacking unproductive cough.

She thought it was the flu just because of how quick it was, lack of mucus etc and how completely ruined I was. With a cold, even a bad one, you could probably force yourself into work if you really wanted to, but with this I couldn't do much of anything.

I do not know about you but the 'mixed messages' we are receiving it makes trying to stay clear of the virus doubly difficult?

As noted above with the viruses longevity on hard surfaces we are also seeing number of bits of 'advice' on how far the spread of the virus once atomised?

Our Govt. advice is the same as for Flu (a physically 'larger' beastie?) that it can spread up to 3 ft

The 'Wuhan whistleblower' told us double that a 6 ft?

& I linked to the U.S. Coronavirus Specialist who tells us 9 ft?

Do we do as our govt. is doing and 'plan for the worst whilst hoping for the best'?

I don’t disagree that things could have been better but if you are trying to explain something to the sometimes thick public why not use the analogy of flu?  Ok it is not the same but similar.  The public are familiar with flu so could relate to it.

How would you describe quickly and clearly what Covid-19 was like without referring to flu or even a cold?

Agree, and it is a very difficult ask to explain the unfamiliar to the general public without causing alarm or complacency.

I think one of the issues with using flu as a benchmark, is that people are actually a little fuzzy on what flu is.  People do tend to mistake a heavy cold for flu, not surprising as they are both respiratory ailments with similar symptoms. If someone has recently had flu as an adult, they will likely understand that it is one serious disease being compared to another, if however they last had flu as a child, they will possibly think, "what's all the fuss?".

Not sure what a really good comparison would be, but the beeb's use last night of TB as a yard stick did surprise me, even when ignoring that they got their figures wrong by an order of magnitude.  Everyone has heard of TB (courtesy of badgers and cows), and probably do understand that it is rather nasty in humans. And while the bbc did at least state it is not a virus, it failed to point out that it is currently by far the biggest killer, globally, of any disease. This is something people probably don't realise with most deaths in being in Africa/India. So their comparison was with something that people in the UK do not actually perceive as an immediate threat, and they then paint a picture Covid-19 as being even less threatening?
