Update; maybe encouraging signs showing?

More than 34,800 people have been infected with the new coronavirus worldwide, the vast majority in China.

There have been 723 deaths in China and one death abroad, in the Philippines.

Of the 34,598 people infected within China, WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said almost 25,000 are in Hubei Province - the region where the outbreak was first reported, which has since become the epicentre of the virus.

Dr Tedros said that the virus is still concentrated in Hubei, and that over the last four days there appeared to have been a slight stabilisation in the number of cases.

However, he said it was still too early to say whether or not the virus has plateaued, as epidemics can often slow down before accelerating again.

But he added that the slow-down was "an opportunity" for them to work to contain the virus.

The wuflu site graph now shows a marked decline in new infections which is due to the draconian action taken in China.
However this really is early days.
The consequences of being isolated in the new military hospital(s) are so devastating that there is huge incentive to not come forward if infected.
Other hotspots are inevitably going to progress in a very difficult way to control.

Yep, people are going to scatter like rats and hide out anywhere they can, new pockets of infection will spring up outside of the containment zone. Horrible decision made by the Chinese government. Again.

It's become increasingly clear how highly contagious this virus is.  Spreads through the air, lies on surfaces for a week and people can be asymptomatic for 5 days.

I've been following things closely for 3+ weeks now and it gets worse by the day.  A pandemic is inevitable, if we are not there already.

The WHO and the media (contrary to my initial thoughts) have been behind the curve from the start.  It is also telling that the Chinese leadership are doing everything they can to prevent the outside world finding out what is really going on.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that 88% of those who died were over 60 years old. 76% of the dead were men and 70% of the dead had underlying diseases. They were most likely heavy smokers.

Few children get infected or, if they do, only show mild symptoms:

"The median age of patients is between 49 and 56 years," according to a report published on Wednesday in JAMA. "Cases in children have been rare."

So why aren't more children getting sick?

Children could have picked up the infection and spread it at school, showing very few symptoms but acting as vessels to move the virus quickly and silently around the city?

Children don’t have a force field from virus, their immune system however is good so it is often very mild form and they’re not tested as it could be comparable to minor cold, however for very young kids I’d say they could be more vulnerable.

Seeing videos coming out China and well the government is pure evil. The international community needs to condemn China and what they’re doing to their people.

The UK government has declared coronavirus a "serious and imminent threat" to public health.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced new measures in England to fight the spread of the virus.

These include additional powers to keep individuals in "supported isolation for their own safety", the Department of Health said.

I expect there will still be stupid people turning up at A&E and GP surgeries with a cold as they do now.

Just because the threat level quite reasonably has been raised the chances for a vast majority of the population coming in contact with the virus must still be low.

Agreed.  The key element of "the imminent threat" announcement is that it gives the government and health authorities the necessary authority to quarantine people without question.

However, the risk level (officially) remains moderate, so in that respect nothing has changed for the UK.

If what was posted yesterday is correct and the virus is, like SARS did, using ACE-2 as it's means to gain access to cells there is a possibility of a difference between the physiology of prepubescent children and adults in regards to the amount of this enzyme in the body? ACE-2 is part of the hormone system that regulates blood pressure so it may not be expressed as much in children as it would be in adults, especially adults that smoke and/or may have other issues that affect blood pressure?  NB - All conjecture on my part, but it is surprising kids are not readily coming done with this.

The number of people killed by the new coronavirus rose by 97 on Sunday, the highest number of casualties in a day.

The total number of deaths in China is now 908 - but the number of newly-infected people per day has stabilised. Across China, 40,171 people are infected while 187,518 are under medical observation.

there are notices all over bubs' school regarding this. The only advice is what they would say for the common cold, washing hands, binning tissues etc.

Are they looking for volunteers to test drugs on for this, or would they need people who actually have the virus for that?

Taken from the Gurniad web site.

"The UK’s decision to declare the coronavirus outbreak as ‘serious and imminent threat’ to public health gives the government new legal powers to forcibly quarantine people and send them into isolation if they pose a threat.

The PA news agency reports that the decision was in response to one of the Britons who returned from Wuhan in China, the epicentre of the outbreak, attempting to leave isolation at Arrowe Park Hospital on Merseyside.

The news agency cited a government source that “there was someone who was threatening to abscond from Arrowe Park”.

All the Britons who returned on the evacuation flight signed a contract agreeing to a 14-day quarantine period, which ends this Thursday. There were concerns however that those contracts were no legally enforceable, leading to the new regulations."

There's always one!

Would be tempted to charge them for the repatriation flight (Virus clearly of enough concern for them to want to leave China) and the costs of the medical tests/care.

Seems like a sensible precaution to me, Swebby...I've always been one for self-quarantine anyway (I've already called-off my farm-day tomorrow, as I've just come down with a stinker of a cold).

But I'm sure someone will start whining about 'civil liberties' and 'knowing my rights'...Look what happened to the, perfectly sensible, idea of ID cards?

If they come up with a vaccine it would presumably have to be trailed, so yes, they would then need subjects that are virus free and probably those regarded as being at risk. I would advise however that if you are inquiring from your own perspective Feb, and i do understand that you are concerned, trials could easily be in an entirely different country to the UK.

It's very unlikely that anything will be developed that will work on those once infected.  Anti virals are complicated things at the best of times, not always guaranteed to work (e.g. tamiflu) and for something that dose it's thing in 14-21 days would be a bit of a pointless exercise.  Focus will be on a vaccine, optimists are talking about 6 months for development before trials, others suggesting it will be at least a year.

One thing that may be of comfort Feb, they are also talking about herd immunity. I.e as the virus spreads, those that are infected and recover (the vast majority it would appear) go back out in to the community and are immune. As the numbers of immune people in the community increase, the virus finds it harder and harder to spread.
