Should I be avoiding fish and chips?

SARS is also a coronavirus; and, were it not for fast and decisive action by health authorities (and for a few contingencies that happened to fall right) really would have caused huge problems worldwide...?

Eastern Asia, with its man-made menageries of ducks, chickens, pigs (plus the weird & wonderful 'exotics' favoured by various wealthy elites) will always be a hotbed of viral evolution...

This one needs watching, IMO!

Genetic analysis shows a coronavirus causing a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China is closely related to SARS, which spread globally in 2003.

Virus has now been sequenced and preliminary analysis suggest it is closely related to SARS. The good news is that it is currently believed that human to human transmission is not viable or at least unlikely.

Okayyyy!

The above view that Human to Human transmission was unlikely may have been a little hasty.

Authorities on alert ahead of lunar new year holiday as 139 new cases of strain detected

Intimate contact between family members is always a possibility but if medical staff become infected then it is time to sit up and take proper notice.  Fortunately, this one appears to have a v.low mortality rate compared to SARS, 3 confirmed deaths thus far with no info if any of those victims were medically compromised.

As an aside, I always find it interesting that end of the world is nigh stories seem to focus on "super volcanoes", mega tsunami, or being hit by something not of this earth.  Probably cos these scenarios make for great CGI stuff on TV programs, yet by far the most likely way that humans will check out, outside of self destruction (aka idiots with nuclear launch codes), is through the inevitable evolution of one of the simplest of biological entities.

This is a developing story and will be updated. A mysterious new virus that was first reported in the central Chinese city of Wuhan and has since spread to two other domestic cities and three countries is...

Well ,here we are again!

Those who have seen me in serious discussion over the H5/N1 concerns will know I had great reason to be ultra careful when such potential pandemics arise...... esp. around chinese New Year!

Zoonotic viruses are the price you pay for demanding 'Meat' when you shift from a poor agrarian society to an emerging economic Nation with Western aspirations I guess?(though folk are saying that 'bats' are favoured as the critter to pass 'nCoV 2019' on to us?)

Media is also full of tales of 'suppression' of information over case numbers/mortality rates?

Numbers (as far as I know) are 295 infected and 6 confirmed deaths

Folk in China are reporting that the epidemic has reached 'stage 3' with outbreaks in Hospitals and inside Families.

I think it is one to watch but that we will all know more after the W.H.O. meet tomorrow to decide how to classify/react to the outbreak

EDIT: Just found this;

"In general, Wuhan residents should not go out unless there's a special need, and for those outside (Wuhan), we suggest that they do not enter the city," said Wuhan Mayor Zhou Xianwang in an interview with CCTV."

Is that just the sloppy translation or does that not sound a bit sinister?

Not so much sinister but is certainly concerning in that they have clearly determined that travel to the city is undesirable.  Hopefully a safety first approach to managing the situation, or, the state authorities are very very concerned......

Looks like 'quarantine' is now an 'enforced state' for the 11 million in Wuhan?

With a 5 day incubation period for the virus (augmented by a 4 day 'grace' period where symptoms do not show) I'm not over confident of our 'controls'  to stop the spread?

Wuhan had 2 Communist party conferences in Wuhan from Jan 5th thru Jan 17th.....all those attending are now safe in all the other provinces prior to the CNY travel fest.....

We've not got this people..........

How do you know? At this stage all we know is that it belongs to Coronavirus family and there is human to human transmission. However, it is right screening may be ineffective presenting no symptoms on point of entry. Personally I think this is much worse than what we are lead to believe. Why would China effectively shut down a city the population of London, you know what they are like with their economy. There has been a confirmed case in Brazil, and Mexico has a case unconfirmed this has rapidly spread globally. Inevitable it will come to Europe.

Additionally, our findings suggest that snake is the most probable wildlife animal reservoir for the 2019‐nCoV based on its RSCU bias resembling snake compared to other animals. Taken together, our results suggest that homologous recombination within the spike glycoprotein may contribute to cross‐species transmission from snake to humans.

Can wearing masks stop the spread of viruses?

_110603108_gettyimages-533567012.jpg
WWW.BBC.CO.UK

Surgical masks have been used to prevent illness in China for decades.

Recall a trip onto a glacier in the Canadian Rockies where some of our Asian friends were still wearing masks.

This stems from the Chinese (and Far Eastern) practice of keeping live animals in captivity in village/town markets, for human consumption. No doubts in my mind to the root (original) cause.

In a demonstration of the law of unintended concequences the commercial effect of this out break on the meat industry round the world has been dramatic as the Chinese buy up stocks of pork, lamb poultry and beef especially from New Zealand . The lamb trade which was expected to collapse as we left Europe and therefore our major buyer France is at an all time high with pork coming a close second. The fields up here are fast  being filled with huts for breeding pigs. With  a short breeding cycle numbers can be increased dramatically.

Add the very wet autumn and winter to this in the UK and shortages of potatoes and carrots due to not being lifted and all the ingredients are there for rapidly rising food prices.

Looks like a 3rd city is now in lockdown (Chibi) and some CNY events have been cancelled including Beijing.

The USA's CDC advice is asking for any folk, visiting affected areas over the last 14 Days, feeling unwell should contact them....

14 Days seems a long period to keep tabs in folk and their person to person contacts?

Patient zero from there in the USA sat on a plane with 400 others for 8 hours and we do not know if they were sick then or caught it then. Then there are all the folk in the airports they travelled through, all the surfaces they touched in communal areas...

Then there's the cabin crew on the planes he took, did they carry on with other flights after his flight?

With such as long incubation (Hi Daniel!, it was a UK virologist  that gave the 5 day incubation period plus up to 4 days with no symptoms showing?) how can we keep tabs on spreaders esp. those who travelled before this was flagged as an issue?
