Scotland /Alba weather discussion 2020

I was just going to post that, now showing heavy snow all the way from 11:00 through 19:00. First time this winter we've had anything like that appearing in the forecast, and with winds from the east there's no mountains in the way.

Only one problem, its arriving to late to 'interfere' with my ability to get to work, but easily early enough to have time to give me problems getting home.

Based on that forecast, I'm planning an early start tomorrow and aim to leave the Aberdeen office by 3pm. I'll let you know if there are any issues with travel around the local roads asap.

I've just noticed that theres a risk the snow could continue until 6am on Tuesday.

Might manager to squeeze in a couple of hours on the hills, weather permitting, tomorrow afternoon.

Did anyone see that Met-O wind warning? Seems to have disappeared now. It was the worst weather warning ever ?

Good read @scottish skier

I remember reading an article from Andy Meldrum back in 2018 - mentioned that in the last decade West coast Winters have on average been stormier and snowier.

Also said that before 2010, Glencoe mountain had never opened before Christmas for snowboarding/skiing. (Since then the centre has opened six times before Christmas)
More days have been lost over the season due to high winds though.

Screenshot below of story.

I was also looking at the monthly mean temperatures since the start of the year 2010 through to the end of 2019. (All against the 1981-2010 Anomaly - Scotland months only)

Meteorological Winter months (December, January and February) since 2010:

Two below average for December

Five below average for January

Four below average February

Interesting facts...six below average for November, July and August which you would expect for Scotland.

March only had three below average. (Two of those classics...2013 and 2018. ?)

November is a better Winter type weather month than December nowadays...time to move Christmas back a month early! ? (More chance of a frosty scene!)

It’s all swings and roundabouts with regards to us getting actual snowfall in Winter - as ever ones location/height above sea level will determine which month delivers the best for you in Scotland.

Heavy snow shower passing through now. Looks like tomorrow’s rush hour could be a bit tricky for the usual areas.

Actually I forgot its tomorrow I'm up Banff way for a training course. Probably rain there, but journey back via Huntly could be fun.

The showers have eased off today here in Dunoon but a few are still about at least the wind has finally gone down. In between the showers we had some nice sunshine and the snow still remains on the hills also saw a few rainbows appear today its still cold with a low of 2.6c at 10.57am currently at 5pm the temp is 4.5c.

Yeah looking decent at the moment, meto forecasts mentioning it "may" be rain for the lowest areas of the central belt and it "might" turn back to rain... I'm optimistic but as ever we won't know until the morning. I suspect the meto are poised ready with the orange crayon if snow does start to fall in the busy commuting areas. We've all been here before though so the snow shovel is still in the garage ?

Glorious day of unbroken sunshine.  Keen breeze made it clear to you that it's still winter but out of the wind felt very pleasant indeed with a max temperature recorded of 6.5c.

Tomorrow is going to be an interesting one, the automated Met Office forecast keeps alternating between persistent sleet and snow so looks like 100m+ is what they consider the threshold to snowy heaven.

For sure, the roads are going to be chaos come teatime - just needs a cm or so of snow to cause carnage round here these days.
