If I can’t have snow in Winter a gale/severe gale event will do - something interesting at least.

Wind gusts not so strong on these charts for other parts but the Met Office are going for 55-65mph quite widely in the warning area above so who knows!

It is currently 11c here, heavy rain and wind gusts of 25-30mph... Sunshine should make an appearance shortly so that is always a plus!

Final day of January which ends on a mild note. Currently sunny and 8C. Rest of the day doesn't look too bad:

Very jealous Sceptical!

Seen a snippet from the Met Office monthly stats for this month...NE and E of Scotland have been drier/sunnier than average! Not bad at all for yourself and many others who live in those parts.

Going back to this Monday’s wind event...this is the wind direction that gives us some big time spray action/decent waves rolling in at the bottom of my street. (Looking forward to it)

@Kirkcaldy Weather Bit of proper weather!  Get yer waterproof/windproof on and enjoy.

I have loved that type of weather since I was a wee boy - even more as an adult! Standing close to the edge (safe distance) watching the waves crash in, roaring gales, squally downpours, hail, clouds, skyscape and the kitchen sink thrown in! It is intense, wee bit scary at times but also bloody marvellous from an extreme weather enthusiast point of view. (Health and safety first )

Anyways I would love to be in either Northern Scandinavia or the Southeastern Coast of Spain at the moment!

This Winter has been hard work from a cold/snow point of view - love coming onto this thread to see everyone’s snow pictures and reports every year but it has been slim pickings so far.
Can everyone please kindly post their snow pictures from Winter 09/10, 10/11 or Febuary/March 18? (Or any other memorable spells)
Desperate times call for past glorious snow events to look back on!

Edit: @CatchMyDrift That does sound a bit grim (waterlogged/mud bath) but at least you are heading to the glorious Braes of Balquhidder! (You done well for weather on yer last trip near Ben Lomond if I remember correctly?)

Heaven forefend that 80mph gusts would actually mean an amber warning, and therefore trigger the storm being named by the Met Office....

@Kirkcaldy Weather great pictures! This is what I like to see in the Scottish thread during Winter!  (Very jealous of @Northern Strath @shuggee and a few others who receive decent measurable snowfall every Winter!)

Tell you what I can’t even laugh anymore at the most recent snowfall you received...since March 16th last year this is the most I have seen! (Hills/mountains don’t count )

Welcome. There are many experienced and knowledgeable members on here but you will quickly learn that chaos descends quickly in the model thread with some folk chopping and changing moods as often as the models change the outlook as for the snow risk you mention there is a chance that lower pressure associated with the PV (polar vortex) will develop in the Atlantic and move toward / through Scotland (perhaps stormy at times) but possibly cold zonality which is basically unsettled weather with cold air embedded which can offer up some snowfall, if it stays on track a few key things will be 850 hpa temperatures (basically -5 is when precip starts to turn wintry though -8 is usually a safer bet for snow, of course temperature and dew points also need to be favourable) and another thing will be wind direction which will take showers to different places from different directions, westerly, north westerly etc.

@CatchMyDrift nearly choked on my tea there!!! Absolute snow filth!!!! Those pictures are incredible!!!!

Fantastic snow depth and drifts!!! This is why I won’t get too annoyed about no snowfall in Winter! (If that is what happens) Yet another March (2006) delivered a massive snowfall as seen in ones pictures so we are always in with a chance!

Late January 2013 looked incredible there - the table, snowman and drifts pictures my favourites! Absolutely amazing - cheers for digging out the old laptop and posting these.

Put me right in the mood to watch the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe!

Scottish Winter/snowfall at its best there!

Cheers again! I’m sure every snow lover on this forum would enjoy those pictures.

13C noted while I was in Alford this afternoon. Absolutely ridiculous.

By comparison, the pictures below were taken end of January 2019.

Spot the difference

Gutters all week in darkest Caithness with light rain, cool to mild temps and not much wind. Back home now - day out in Embra tomorrow, 1st train down, last train back, hopefully. Mild and dull still says my forecast.

Anyone seen the lesser spotted wintry weather on the horizon or are we just holding out for spring now?

Topped 13C,briefly between home and Brechin, early afternoon, according to the car sensor. But despite the blustery wind and the warmth, the ground does not seem to be drying out to any great extent; puddles and mud remain in the yard, track and general surrounds this evening. Although my location has dodged most of the recent showers, the ground must still be saturated, possibly due to poor drainage hereabouts.

A dry settled spell would be fine.

We did ok snow-wise earlier this week, but soon gone with return of the endless rain. Been a few other dribs and drabs of snow but nothing compared to other years...still time...

(Ha ha just clocked I have been registered on netweather since 2008, and this is my first post...!)

I've just checked and the ground around the house is also quite soft. That's surprising given how mild and windy it's been of late.

Cracking video @101_North - glory days!

Could be something to do with the old funnel effect through the Central Belt @Ross90

Imagine living in Barra though - probably just a standard Winter storm for them.

I agree with @shuggee - Met Office naming storms/weather warning system is most confusing! I have given up trying to understand the logic of it.

There is no debate, it's always a Forth-Clyde streamer, or just a general Forth generated streamer. We'd need a freakish cold southerly wind for the Firth of Clyde to produce a streamer and then it would be heading north.

How about we talk isthmuses now, or is it isthmii?

What if it is from the west though? :spiteful: :oldlaugh:

Just the same here ground surface very wet and muddy again in spite of RH of 60%. Can only assume that ground and puddles are colder than the air above so producing condensation instead of drying. Rain yesterday fell at 6c. .Steading walls are the same today lots of condensation on the surface. Once everthing warms up the drying process will start
