Complete absence of honeybees here this year, bit worrying actually.

I'm a bit surprised at that as I know there are amateur kept hives not huge distances away from you. Not sure where the commercial beekeepers have been putting thier hives this year as there are usually quite a few in the area. Did notice some by a field of rape around Monymusk. If you still have fields of rape around they may be not going any further than that as its like a free, all you can eat, buffet for them.

The honey from rape is almost colorless, very sweet and turns brick hard so you need to extract it from the frames quickly. You get loads though as we found out one year, around 100lbs from 2 hives in the space of a month or so. Luckily where we are now there seems to be far less rape fields, and the bees are getting plenty of other stuff closer by. We'll get less honey but it should be much nicer stuff.

Our bees have been very busy on the cotoneaster, as have the bumblebees. We still have one rowan tree in bloom that is buzzing, as was the sycamore yesterday evening. The hawthorn alongside the road across from the house is aslo in bloom but I understand that can be a bit of a hit or miss for them so I'll need to take a look on a decent day to see if they are bothering with it. The clover should hopefully start flowering soon too, which they tend to go mad for.

Yes very little insect life these past few cool days as winessed by increased numbers of birds at the feeders. Think I"ve mentioned before that wild bees are a tasty treat for badgers and their  ground nests are being dug up all along the field margins.Certainly gets the attention of the powers that be when you say they are destroying pollinating insects.

Lack of oilseed rape is mainly down to the loss of a very effective insecticide with a European ban last year. The main culprit here is flea beetle which can destroy emerging seedlings.Early fast establishment is the best form of defence.Neeps are the same.We can use one insecticide that controls them for 24 hours but has no persistence unlike the anned one..Timing is crucial just as numbers are about to explode and you give seedlings a chance to get past the vulnerable stage.where they are being fed on and hot sunshine dehydrates the shredded leaves and dessictes them.

Planting   winter oilseed rape in the autumn is a pure gamble now and many fields are resown in the spring due to por establishment. so a lot of farmers have abandoned the crop.

Pleasant day. Barely any wind with some sun alternating with the cloud. Mostly similair tomoroww before a late change which might end up bringing more flashes and bangs (eventually) one to watch as those easterlies kick in

Could be interesting lots of storms and massive amounts of instability currently across countries like Lithuania where there was tornado yesterday, Belarus, Estonia etc but I suspect the easterlies will bring cloud and potential haar for us east coasters and never a fan of easterlies when looking for storm potential 99% of the time seems to kill off any potential storms here unless it’s in winter with cold 850s like 2010 and BFTE.

Very workable day.

Max of 16c in the early afternoon thanks to the sunshine that was around in the morning.

Overcast by mid-afternoon but it has stayed dry all day, though rain not that far away looking at the rain radar.

Light winds throughout.

Kids had fun watching the Blue Tits feldge from one of the bird boxes today.  At least four so far.  Cute as anything, though not inclined to hang around long enough to get a decent photo.

Risk of some torrential downpours and maybe a wee bit of hail/thunder/lightning later today - especially SW Scotland.

Tricky forecast - if we can get the gloom/cloud to break up early afternoon we should be in business for some convective skies late afternoon/early evening.

Slight risk issued by Convective Weather:

0DB27803-356E-45A4-A482-0CF138A2B4E5.thumb.png.5eb393793a17c7b7eeafa80b18020774.png

Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Wed 10 Jun 2020 - 05:59 UTC Thu 11 Jun 2020

ISSUED 06:52 UTC Wed 10 Jun 2020

ISSUED BY: Dan

A disrupting upper trough will result in a deepening upper low sliding southwards across the British Isles on Wednesday, primarily centred over Ireland / Irish Sea and reaching the northern Bay of Biscay by 06z Thursday. Its timing potentially coinciding with diurnal heating results in a very messy forecast evolution, with a mixture of dynamic and convective rainfall in various places. Two main frontal boundaries are identified during Wednesday daytime - one lingering over eastern England into Scotland, and another straddling Irish Sea coasts. As the upper low deepens, forcing aloft will increase - especially by the evening hours. The biggest concern over convection potential in most areas is extensive cloud and resultant limited surface heating. Large disparities between model guidance results in lower than normal confidence for the local detail during this forecast period.

... SW ENGLAND / WALES / W MIDLANDS / NW ENGLAND / SW SCOTLAND ...

Rather extensive cloud and patchy outbreaks of rain seem likely during Wednesday daytime, but some cloud breaks may develop and allow surface heating to occur - potentially yielding up to 500 J/kg CAPE in places. Scattered showers may develop with time, particularly over Wales, Cumbria and SW Scotland where orographic forcing will aid in forced ascent given an otherwise fairly slack surface pattern. Forecast profiles suggest that a warm nose at 550-600mb, which may initially limit the depth of convection to around 14,000ft, will be gradually eroded as the mid-levels continue to cool and moisten as the upper low approaches and deepens. Consequently, deeper convection could evolve towards the second half of the afternoon. Weak shear and saturated profiles suggests lightning may be fairly localised. Nonetheless, a couple of low-end SLGTs (30%) have been issued.

Towards the evening hours, the increased forcing aloft is likely to engage with the frontal boundary over the Irish Sea, resulting in more widespread outbreaks of heavy rain developing over Wales and SW England. This is likely to be a mixture of dynamic and convective rainfall, and may ultimately lead to an increase in lightning activity in the vicinity of south Wales and SW England during the evening hours - especially where convergence is maximised close to the axis of a developing surface low. However, weak shear, saturated profiles and limited CAPE casts much uncertainty over how much lightning activity may actually occur.

Met Office summary for Strathclyde:

Headline:

Cloudy morning with rain. Brighter afternoon with heavy showers

Today:

A cloudy morning with outbreaks of rain. The rain turns more showery towards midday with some bright or sunny spells developing. The showers expected to become heavy, perhaps thundery, and slow moving in the afternoon. Light winds. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

Weekend also holds some storm promise - temperatures should be into the low twenties by then.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Sunshine and showers through the coming days, the showers, especially over the weekend, occasionally heavy and perhaps thundery. Best sun and warmest in west, overnight low cloud in east clearing.

Dreich.

Max temperature was 11c, currently 8c and heavy drizzle (drizzling since early afternoon).

Good growing weather though as this type of weather gives the garden a good soaking.

Met office mentioning thundery showers by the weekend, fingers crossed...

Now damp and 15c

Looks like a humid few days ahead

Well yesterday turned into a right stinker! Sunshine never broke through and the gloom remained all day! Heavy bursts of rainfall in the evening and a max of 14C.

Not quite as warm as @SW Saltire today - lovely though with plenty of sunshine and a max of 17C.

Blue sky hanging on at the moment...will be covered in cloud shortly though!

Muggy few days ahead with temperatures in the high teens/low twenties for quite a few of us - risk of heavy showers breaking out...perhaps thundery!

Any thoughts @Kirkcaldy Weather ?

June so far has been lacking in the convective weather department - hopefully see some nice cloudscapes over the next few days.

E/ENE wind has been quite gusty recently - 20/25mph at times.
I prefer that direction in Winter/early Spring...

Cool and breezy day with temperatures struggling up to 14c. Not very summer like, despite some sunshine. Haar definitely looks a risk from later tomorrow onwards

Possibly something for SW / W Scotland but as I mentioned easterlies are not something that interests me for storms/ thunder unless it’s a 2010/ BFTE of course as @Hawesy says and I mentioned few days ago think us east coasters will be lucky to avoid the haar and cloudy skies. Give me a southerly plume like flow

A most acceptable day.

Light winds, good periods of sunshine and pleasantly warm with a max of 13c - sounds cool but the strong sun made up for that.

Looking NE you can see a big wall of harr lurking with ill-intent behind the Bennachie ridgeline.  Its trying to flood over the top of Bennachie but still hasn't got sufficient oomph to make it.

Don't think that will last forever, pity as the skies look good for noctilucent cloud in an hour or so.

Some lovely Cirrus around at dusk as well...

Wrote the last comment too soon.

Looked outside just now and oh my..

If you are in NE Scotland and not cursing at Harr, have a look outside as there is a rather lovely display of Noctilucent clouds at the moment.

We're lucky in Scotland in some ways, pleasure of the Aurora Borealis in Winter and this in summer.

Some bright ints here AM and mild too with a max of 21.1C. By evening gloomy with light rain and drizzle at times with the temps down to 12.8C. Not looking like much in the way of sunshine in the next couple of days either for this side of the country. Possible haar and not much of a temperature range.

Day of two seasons.

Morning was summer with plenty sunshine, light winds and a max temp of 16.5c.

Downhill after lunch with cloud rapidly increasing leading to the autumnal deluge outside at the moment.

Wind also picking up a bit from the NE; current temperature 10c so not that cold.

Met Office teasing with the idea of a bit of thunder tomorrow.  Other forecasts say otherwise so lets see who wins this battle of the models.

Only one word needed to describe the weather outside at the moment, and the forecast for the rest of the day...

PISH

Forecast for tomorrow is only marginally better, so thank goodness for lockdown as I can enjoy the decent weather midweek rather than relying on the weekend.
