Got down to -1.7 C here last night, currently 8.6 C and wind really starting to pick up with rain on and off. A shame we didn't get to see any nacreous clouds, hopefully it doesn't take too long before the next opportunity.

Mild start with wind gusting to 50 mph. Great conditions for drying out the ground and firewood.

Currently 11C.

BBC weather forecast going with sleet and snow for low levels northern Scotland later today.

Next week looks wet, mild and very windy.

Tedious.....

Nice  east Sutherland hills were looking wintry yesterday as I drove down the A9 (closed due to an accident as usual) but hey, it's the weekend, so it all turns to pish and mush and it's miserable dull minging pants and crap out there.

The squall line is very distinct, could it have been this?

Next week looks preety wintry on higher ground in Scotland, significant precipitation and some colder uppers - ski resorts will be happy I suspect after a poor start to the season, often takes until mid Jan before things get going properly..

Yes the mwis outlook has changed significantly last night. Looking much better!

PLANNING OUTLOOK

All mountain areas of Britain from Sunday 12th January 2020

A series of deep Atlantic lows will influence the British Isles during the week ahead. Winds generally west or southwesterly, but often containing a cold air mass originating around Greenland. The result being that most UK mountains will stay commonly sub-zero over the next 10 days, with only brief periods of thaw. Frequent precipitation, often rain lowest slopes, but accumulating upland snow, may become substantial Scottish Highlands. Occasional hail. Sustained periods of upland gales, at times storm force winds on the mountains.

The squall line has just passed through here too, followed by a quite sudden noticeable drop in the wind speed, and a patch of blue sky.  More rain on the horizon though.

Yep. We didn't get much of a squall here but the wind dropped very suddenly as the line passed. Weirdly quiet outside now.

It was 9.7C an hour ago but it's dropped to 8.6C now.

What a wash out...well at least it'll keep the stoor doon.

I had peek over in the suicide watch thread and saw this, if this were a summer chart it would be roasting, incredible that there has been so much dominant high pressure to the south of the UK this winter it just keeps reforming, it wouldn't be so bad if it was a cold high pressure but those southern wind directions are looking like double figures again.

It would seem the models have real trouble with cold but mild predictions somehow turn out correct...some reprogramming of the Sinclair Spectrum Climate Model required I think.

After a bit of a drier interlude during the first half of the night but the rain really has set in through this morning.

The squall line went through here about 10.30 and the wind has calmed down completely since then.

www.snow-forecast.com see some impressive snow accumulations next week for Nevis and Glencoe ski centres - mid/upper mountain. Cairngorm, Lecht and Glenshee look like missing out this time.

The ski centres are currently free of natural snow, by Friday the webcams could be showing a significant change.
