The 'Polar Night Jet' has been so strong this year that it allowed very low temps in the lower strat?

This meant that , come the rising sun, we saw plenty of ozone destroyed

The other thing are the huge temp anoms around the Arctic hinting of a rapid start to spring/summer with snow cover being rapidly melted out and the land warmed?

Is this due to China laying off industry for over a month so allowing their particulate pollution to 'drop out' of the atmosphere so lessening 'global dimming' over the worst impacted regions?

Is this due to reduced air travel so a '9/11 bump in temps' under frequent travelled routes?

Is it a bit of both?

I think the ozone in the arctic is very likely to be atmospheric circulation related given the AO was off the scale positive around February. It locked up all the cold air over that region but should quickly recover once arctic temperatures warm.

One of the interesting questions I've recently thought about is will the sudden drop of pollutants cause any strange changes to atmospheric circulation patterns? We haven't seen a drop in pollution like this before.

Hope all is well GW, Seems like once covid-19 broke out into Europe there was no containing it... you do have to wonder how things will change after this. Do we go back to the struggling oil industry or is this the moment we start taking up new technologies?

Analysts say the coronavirus and a savage price war means the oil and gas sector will never be the same again

The situation is really dire in Central Europe. We are missing one year worth of precipitation since 2015. The worst drought in 500 years in Czechia.

Coupled with the polar plunges (on the far side of the H.P. we've been enjoying?) that have taken all the fruit blossoms not a good year so for them!

Fun times ahead! Vegetable prices are already through the roof here. And those polar plunges after early warmth will do the same for fruit. Would bet there is another one coming in May just to put the final nail in the coffin.

I know covid-19 has everyone's attention but, should we see N.H. temps spike, due to the impacts of reduced industrial activity/air travel, then the tipping points we sail so close to in so many areas will be triggered and when one goes the cascade of impacts it drives will leave Covid-19 looking like a tardy side show (IMHO)

Interesting times......

On the eve of the summer solstice, something very worrying happened in the Arctic Circle. For the first time in recorded history, temperatures reached 38°C...

The extreme heat across Siberia, why it's not entirely unexpected and some of the consequences.

Interesting to see this update from Les 2 Alpes on Facebook. It seems that the cool spring and early summer has helped along with the techniques they are using.

Record alert! ❄️

At the beginning of June, we broke the snow record for the last 10 years on our glacier!
➡ 3 m15 of snow, which is equivalent to about 12 meters of fresh snow...

Behind this record, there are favorable conditions but also a huge preservation work: snow conservation, damage, scientific follow-up,... The glacier is not a tool but our most beautiful treasure! Remember: https://cutt.ly/3oUugX2

Looks like the U.S. is now in line to see up to 40% of the lower 48 see a period of 'extreme heat' over the coming days/weeks

When the forecaster was quizzed about when we'd see 'lower than average temps' again he stretched things out until at least November!!!

The U.S. is looking to have a torrid time of summer with higher than average landfalls from Hurricanes and this extended heat wave across the lower 48'......

Watch this space eh?
