Is it me or is British weather getting more and more boring?
I fear that by the time I eventually have children of my own, they will not be able to experience the joys of playing in the snow as we will no longer have any snow at all by that point. The way things are going, I can certainly see that happening.

We were first told this in the early 90's and it turned out to be incorrect. I suspect it will be the same this time.

Yes it’s been a manky winter, probably the worst one since 2013/14, but probably not that mild when compared to last winter or December 2015.

It just feels like it’s been damp and cold at times, as opposed to mild overall. Just the lack of snow or dry sunny spells have been noticeable.

It’s basically been chucking it down and windy since late September. There have only been a few sunnier, calmer days. We needed some rain after last summer (quite dry in the S) but it has been relentless.

While it does seem that way is that actually true ? Only two years ago we had widespread snow across the Uk. Plus the hot summer of 2018 hot spell last year to with the temperature record broken. This winter has being guff though for cold just rain wind and more rain and more wind never felt mild either because of the vile wind making it feel about 5 degrees colder that what it actually is. Last two days was beautiful here sunny and calm. Back to awful cold rain today at 3 degrees earlier just to rub it in cold but not cold enough for snow. Be interesting to note coldest temperature recorded this winter and how it compares to other winters ?

And summer is one long dull cloud fest at times. I hope we don’t have another one of those years.

What an absolute load of rubbish!...certainly if you live in the south or south east of England you know this simply isn't true, since approximately 2013 give the odd exception (usually Augusts and last summer June) our summers have improved to a degree.

It does seem since 2013, snow events are becoming less frequent.

Yes, winter's have reverted back to the 1987-2008 type since 2013.

Still though, the cold has been there, trapped by the fast spinning polar vortex.Greenland has had record low registers along with many North American points. All against the back drop of a warming global climate.Just waiting on comment on why Arctic ice melt has failed to have an impact on sea conveyor systems as was predicted it would, causing colder winters here.

Well I have to say I have never seen a bbc weather forecast go in to so much detail about different models etc . I was taken by surprise but glad to see this and maybe the public that are not in this thread or part of netweather and other similar inferior sights might  start to understand some of the aspects of forecasting etc .

Cheers suprised got that low this winter. 2014 was an stinker -9.0 bad times how depressing nowhere has got  below -15 since 2013 seven years ago quite telling. I guess the 2018 low shows what can happen with the right set up in place and in South East England to.

So how did the UK do for snow this winter? No bad if you ask me:

The Stats:

December: 28 days of 31 the UK had snow
January: 26 days of 31 the UK had snow
February: 27 days of 29 the UK had snow

So out of a possible 91 days, the UK recorded snow on 81 days. Of the 10 days where snow was not recorded, 6 of those were under a high pressure area, where no precipitation fell.

Not bad if you live up in the Highlands

We’ve had just one day of snow falling and not settling down on the low ground in the South!

If the August and half of July are poor, that’s poor in my book.

Yes, summers have been better, but only 2013, 14 and 18 can be classed as great and parts of 2017. The rest were all disappointing, even if they started off promising with a warm sunny spell. I don’t want my summer to end in late July, which has been the case in many summers since 2006.

You must be blind, if you are not aware of how many cloudy days we’ve received in London the the south east during some summers.

Snow doesn’t seem less frequent here - I haven’t looked at the stats I’m just talking anecdotally.
I went 5 winters in a row without seeing any snow falling but I’ve now seen snow falling for the last 3 winters in a row.

Let me remind you we do not live in the Mediterranean and we have the vast Atlantic to the west which holds a lot of moisture and has always been the way of the UK's climate, but of recent summers we haven't always experienced Tm air but also drier Cm air at times due to the increasing presence of high pressure to the south...

and by the way you're talking as if every August is poor which again is not the case in our part of the world.

Exactly. Of recent years, only 2014 and 2017 were what I would class as ‘bad’. Here at least August 2017 was even a very usable month, it just wasn’t summery apart from the odd day here and there and the BH hot spell. 2018 grew gradually worse as it went on. Last year had fine weather in the first and final third but had a garbage filler. 2016 was very decent here.

Ive always thought that August does its own thing when June and July are either great or terrible.

Long range forecast Cold, snow etc = actual weather cold wet wind.

Long range forecast Warm, dry and calm = actual weather cold wet wind.

Repeat process, no point in looking at any forecast at the moment as the same pattern keeps on coming as has been for months on end now! Any signs of major change just become eroded nearer to the time.

Our nearest met office station at Bingley lists February 2002 the wettest at 191mm

The wettest of any month is June 2007,way ahead of any other at 261mm

September,October and November were all wetter than any other month in the last 4 years

February 2020 unbelievable 307mm,the wettest month recorded in 120 years

Summer 2017 was a lot like 2005 and 2010 in that you had early heat and a cool end. It's how i like my summers, May 2008, June 2018, July 2011, August 2014.

A winter to forget like 2013/14 but unfortunately will stick in our heads for the wrong reason.
