@Norrance I was just looking back at November...really was a great month for ice days at sea level, frosts, snow over the hills/mountains, cloud types and sunsets.

Was browsing through some of my pictures - seems so long ago now!

It was the perfect Autumn (Winter-esque) month for my location.

The last time we had any interesting weather/cloud types here was mid December. (Few pictures I took below)

It has been so boring for the past three weeks due to endless low cloud, drizzle and all round dullness.
I would not mind the mild/very temperatures if they arrived with sunshine...but it’s just been mostly gloom!

We are forecast for gales here tomorrow and Tuesday with gusts of 50mph + so I should be thankful of getting a bit of weather at least!

February and March has delivered snowfall wise over the past few years so hopefully it strikes again this year. (After that bring on a hot late Spring and Summer! )

One of the guys on TWO is saying he has never seen such mild ensembles in 20 years , it's a remarkable persistence of pattern , and it seems it happens more and more often .

Not a pattern I want to get accustomed to but fear may have to

Sadly it's becoming more and more apparent that this winter is a dead loss for cold/snow fans.  It is shaping up to be the worst during the internet era and there have been some bad ones!

Winter 46/47 had a number of colder spells though, from beginning of that Winter.

Aye...but I'm comforting myself with my current thoughts that summer may be slow moving trough dominated- hopefully get to see some diurnally driven convection and torrential afternoon downpours.

I have A LOT of hope for next winter.

That map back up my own stats that I recorded here. By memory alone, I would have told you that December was extremely dull and horrible here. However, it just goes to show that recording data supersedes the memory!

Met Office derived average for here is 59.8 hours. I recorded 76.4 hours.

The rainfall map is a bit out, though. 189mm here, derived average is 100mm.

Oops - Than I read 'November' haha

This time 10 years ago we were frozen solid and I was about to experience a -15c minimum. There was maybe 5cm of snow lying and everything was so wonderfully wintry.

Fast forward 10 years and we get...this.

Indeed, I have been fondly remembering winter 2009/10 recently and can't believe it was 10 years ago!  January 6th was when the south got a good pasting with snow depths in excess of a foot for some.  May have to dig out some photos tomorrow to mark the anniversary!

Come on it's only 5th of January, must be reverse psychology I guess...All of this month to go, and don't forget it's a leap year this year so one extra day of winter in February to look forward to!

Then there's March and even April, maybe a white Easter on the cards again this year. Although my preference is for cold and snow to turn up before the first week of March, after that it's all about the drip, drip, drip and a horrible mess by lunchtime, around these parts anyway.

The UK is not known for being a cold or snowy place, winters tend to range between cool and mild.

I'm gobsmacked by some of these responses tonight.. Signing of for winter on the 5th of January! Nothing in the models showing for cold! Correct me if I'm wrong but the models can't really even see beyond 10 day's! And the most depressing part of all of this is, come next year, we will have the same old posters back saying that's winter done again this year! This time next year, things could be just has bad as this current scenario! I actually feel the 2nd half of winter will be more promising!! If some of you can't hack a mild start to winter and it messes you up so much, perhaps it's time to find a new hobby! With reference to dons post above, regarding the 2010 snowfall... Here is a satellite picture from around that date... Literally all of the UK bathed in the white stuff... I'm not going to say please don't give up on winter just yet folks.... Its pretty bad it has to be said at all so early in the season.. If we do get a significant cold snap later this month or February, It will be Interesting to see how some of you respond to it, after writing off this winter!

I do admire your optimism Matt and it is good to hear!  That satellite image says it all really about the January 2010 cold/snowy spell!  In answer to your question above, my response will be one of pure delight!
