Worst start to a model watching season since i have been on here, if you include the LRF's in it, far too many nails already in the coffin at such an early stage this year.

Roll on spring aye!  Or book a winter holiday to North America.  That should do it!

Roll on some decent tropical forcing.

Think it might be in short supply!  Fond memories of ten years ago.

Is it me, or does this supposed period of settled 'chilly' weather we're getting right now producing relatively average maximum temps?

is that even bigger signs of the modern winterr, I mean look at last Feb, 20 degrees reached in sunshine

No way, Ian is a snow fan, like us all on here, he just knows and accepts the change

I think we all do deep down.  Doesn’t preclude cold winters, though but they will become as rare as rocking horse poop.

Turning frosty here....again, I can recall several winters of the past that were virtually frost free!

Long way to go till spring, even then March can be cold and snowy.

The start of Spring will herald the arrival of winter

well yes because PV and jet etc get miles weaker, meaning more chance of northerlies and easterlies, a westerly between late March and say Whit is rare

A bit like 2008 with a cold Easter with snow for some and April 6th that delivered snow to the south. Better than nowt after a mild winter.

Always! They call it even though posters at the time are correct to highlight cold charts/potential etc. They then go very quiet when the cold does verify. Not that it does these days!

Stupid question, but could there be a man made way to stop these warm fronts coming in?

On another note, it is early in the game still.....

I wouldn't say rare but i know what you mean - Easterlies and particularly Northerlies are far more common.

Aye, certainly not as rare as a northerly or Easterly between 1 Dec and late Feb

If there is anything to hold onto perhaps.........the UKMO and GFS are very similar and actually pretty decent at 120 hr.

i personally don't buy the progression of either at 144 hr

Given the massive ups and downs of the past 24 hours of model watching ....anything can happen beyond 120 hrs

And if you live in the Northern half of the UK i suspect you will get a taste of Winter at the end of next week

Interestingly, I've recorded my northerlies in winter months than autumn months. The hardest period to achieve one seems to be September - November. The prime period seems to be mid Jan to late April. May have been different historically however.

Despite starting myself in 2004, I still haven't recorded enough years to find a clear trend in easterlies. Since then, there have been many westerly springs and easterly autumn months.

Is this up and coming cold spell on or off

Trying to find a forecast on here rather than using the BBC.

BBC say cold weather with snow showers in the north and east later next week

Not seen a post on here yet suggesting that .

Can someone point me in the right direction please thanks in advance for your time.

Too early for a certain answer to that but the trend has been and at the moment is for Temperatures to be perhaps a little below average overall for next week with heavy rain and strong winds a feature bringing milder interludes but with colder showery conditions too with wintry showers for more Northern parts in particular.

That's all that can be said for now.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Jordan that's a massive help thanks I really value your posts on this site.

The importance of a good forecast is vital for me I live very remote and visit patients for the NHS again in rural communities

I get around in a 4x4 that's not a problem but in winter I have to plan my journeys to a point.

Any crucial weather warnings are taken with great importance.

Thank you for your help and advice and that goes for everyone

Who can keep me updated through the winter months.

Regards Steve... sorepaw
