This gave a proper blizzard here in gale force SE winds with 10 ft snow drifts 9 inches of snow in about 4 hours and hundreds of people stuck in cars over the South Downs and Epsom Downs.

Can anyone guess the year ?

Another possibility would be say early January 1982, the 13th December 1981 I mentioned I would have thought would have said snow turning to rain for the SW.

Here is one that tends to get forgotten as it fell between the great Highland blizzard at the end of Jan 25th to29th and the great South West blizzard of 16th to18th Feb. This gave a foot of snow from Northumberland right up to Aberdeenshire including to Newcastle, Edinburgh and Dundee.

At about 7 pm it suddenly turned to rain after about 4 or so hours of heavy drifting snow, the centre of the depression suddenly moved North, allowing milder air into the South and a rapid thaw.

The original  forecast was for the centre of the low to stay in the channel,so a pretty poor forecast,by morning only the drifts were left the level snow cover had gone.

Your`re not going to find a much better charts than these for looks which did deliver a foot of snow and ample drifting, like february 1985 but charts are far more impressive. The perfect easterly.

Here's the charts I choose, relating to my location.

I had to post two days because it occurred in between them - circa 12pm on the 5th. If you can work it out, you get a free like.

Awesome charts.

I think  we will see those type of charts during this winter season for a change and not just the spring.

After the incredible amount of rain this autumn (500mm+ here) I'd take anything which has a massive 1040hpa high slap bang over the top of the UK.

think it was already confirmed as Dec 13th 1981..plus this is the chart for the great SW Blizzard of 1978..which only really affected the SW of England and Wales
