No we never get thunder in the Cheshire gap streamer whether it is rain or snow.

I have once, in march 19th 2007, had thunder, lightning, sleet snow and hail

Friday 17th December 2010. A day of snow showers, around midday i had broke up for christmas holidays and getting to my road then a  snow shower began and lasted 20 minutes giving a dusting. But i love this picture i took one of my all time favourites.

I'm pretty sure I've seen that left image as someone's avatar before!

Yep the day the bitterly northerly airflow sweeped down the Country had a Rain to Snow event on the 16th in the late afternoon. Then the colder weather came with a showery regime on the Friday but a low pressure brought substantial snow on the Saturday :)

What fantastic strong pressure this was pushing down on us all, it kept any snow well away from the UK Posted Image

Yes, that really must have been really exciting and interesting watching the sun rise in the west and set in the east day on day.

For me it has to be the Feb 1991 blizzard that hit London like a train...First gulf war had just started I believe......remember going to pub and when we came out all main roads were seriously white and covered and snow did not stop falling for ages.

Yes and the beauty of that is that I remember telling everyone at school we were going to get a good week or so off school on the Monday before and them laughing at me but I remember not fretting once about it, it was as good as nailed from the moment I saw Ian Mccaskills countryfile forecast on the sunday.

No one believed me until we were ordered home early and parents evening was cancelled, even though there was only a cm of lying snow at the time.

Yes agreed that was fantastic. I am not sure how to copy you tube countryfile forecasts in but that was a cracker as I remember USA was under balmy temperatures at time really mild I think.

Maybe someone who knows can paste that in as surely was a great Countryfile forecast.

Found it - This is a great piece by Weather History on this cold spell of Feb 1991

That forecast that's on youtube wasn't the countryfile forecast, he began the countryfile one with these words 'Good afternoon, the coldest spell of weather for 4 years is on its way', I cannot get it anywhere and doubt if anyone ever will, that one on youtube was on the Wednesday, the day before the great blizzard, I think it was after the 9 oclock news.

I will copy my post from the snow streamers thread as it contains my favourite charts and also some extra info.

On 13/09/2019 at 17:04, Kirkcaldy Weather said:

Here in Kirkcaldy we get the Forth streamer with snow showers starting in the North Sea then moving into the firth of forth before arriving here, the 2 best I have experienced in my lifetime so far (I am 23) were November 2010 and February / March 2018 Beast From The East.

The perfect setup is as straight of an easterly flow as possible and 850 temps usually from -8 and below.

November 2010

Winds were alternating between east and north easterlies on the 27th archives-2010-11-27-0-0.thumb.png.59772d62fe6b4f2429fd04d1a3ff4ac6.png  archives-2010-11-27-12-0.thumb.png.3a5f5d8db4ae254af8904a63fa42a957.png with the first signs of the heavy snow arriving on the Saturday night

By midday on the 28th the flow was perfect with a straight easterly continuing to feed in non stop bands of heavy snow which were quickly piling up the snowfall amountsarchives-2010-11-28-12-0.thumb.png.48189a9c2f0b4f06219187730456f9ba.png  archives-2010-11-28-12-1.thumb.png.876ab9dd352c3b115cfc73adbfb29827.png the easterly flow persisted even heading into the 30th archives-2010-11-30-0-0.thumb.png.6710958913c927f730e0d5dae491e190.png some more forecasts of the event

I was living in a higher part of Kirkcaldy at the time and by the end of the event there was over a foot of snow. Some other youtube videos from Kirkcaldy of this event

Another event that I remember vividly and one which delivered another few inches on top of what we had already got at that point in December 2010 and as stated the transport minister lost his job due to the chaos on the M8 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/scotland/8189583/Scotlands-Transport-Minister-urged-to-resign-over-snow-chaos.html

Many parts of the UK experienced significant snow events from late November to early December 2010. This case-study focuses on the period 28 November to 2 December.

I also vividly remember seeing the local stations reporting -15 C overnight on the 2nd / 3rd December 2010 as shown in the chart on the above pdf a truly amazing achievement for here as we rarely get -10 C even on the coldest winters nights  archives-2010-12-3-0-0.thumb.png.a60edc77942ecbe7433ba35b17cb7bcd.png

Another thing on my winter wishlist every year is for a white Christmas, the last technical white Christmas here was 2009 as a weak band of snow reached here in the evening but 2010 also had lying snow so will include charts for both years.

December 2010 really was something, We had days of proper blizzards here (where the air is full of snow) with drifts up to the window sills. The snow was very cold/dry. Temp dropped to -22c one night.

I lived in Rochester, Kent at the time. At one point it snowed continuously for 5 days. The snow was about a foot or so deep and I was walking to work in temperatures of -14'c. Loved it.

27 Nov 2010 and 28 Feb 2018 be my favourite cold ones (considering what I've experienced anyway). Meanwhile, for summer... 8 July 2013 and 28 June 2018.

That is the best chart from my lifetime, 12 January 1987.  Minus 18 uppers across most of England, 36 hours of non-stop snow, proper blizzards.  Dropped over 24 inches of snow in Essex, it really was an incredible event in what was otherwise a very uneventful winter.

We had similiar synoptics in late March 2013, which had they occurred in January could have rivalled conditions in Jan 1987. Not sure what the uppers were in late March but I think we saw sub -10 air. There was a complete reversal of winds on our side of the arctic, easterlies stretching from Siberia to Canada.
