Check this out. Fantastic viewing of the snow closing the M62 in 1979 due to snow. Not sure of the date but would assume Jan/Feb 1979.

What a great way to demonstrate how icy it was at the end of the clip. If that was filmed today they would be crucified

great clip, loved the copper telling the driver off  " are you an idiot" classic stuff.

just would not happen nower days, carnt help think weve lost somthing along the way.

Motorway would have been closed because of heavy sleet, also pulling injured people out of cars, motorway would have been closed for the day while they investigate it

Couldn't get past what it said at 1:50: The highest section of motorway in Europe? That's utter nonsense, even in 1979.

Yes, it’s the highest section of motorway in the UK for sure. Which is the highest motorway in Europe?

I suspect it may have been the highest at the time.
Probably some payage autoroutes in Central France or Spain are higher now.

Autobahn built up there in 1930s. Much higher and older than the M62

Thanks for that - the last 15 mins are amazing, and it's hard to believe how differently things were handled just a few decades ago. Men (dare I say it) were allowed to be men, then - physical strength, bravery, initiative, quick-acting no-nonsense practicality. A bit mad, perhaps...but I agree with marksp when he says he can't help thinking we've lost something along the way.

I hope those qualities still lie within us (of either sex), however deeply buried by modern sensibilities. If not, when the internet completely crashes one day, along with all the things dependent on it (which by then will be literally everything), and people have to live once more by their own wits, knowledge, courage and physical capabilities, we really will be completely stuffed...

Not forgetting it was closed for about 48 hours in February 2018 from J21 (Milnrow) to J23 (Outlane) with people stuck and the Military called in!

The main problem within Oldham/Calderdale is when the Snow Warning Signs are switched on for the local routes they advise to use the M62 instead which if the weather's bad is absolutely no lower than the other Pennine passes.

Really is a risk travelling over the Pennines around that area if there's even a flurry of snow

Late January 1995 when all those motorists got stuck on the M62 Trans Pennine section

Fri 27th rings a bell, very snowy day, but thaw followed as mild air arrived from the SW
