Chasing down the wettest autumn record

The wettest autumn was in 2000 where 436 mm of rainfall fell. At present Sheffield is on 409.6 mm so it looks like this record will be broken easily.

Looking at the yearly rainfall 2000 provided 1065.8 mm and 2012 provided 1217.7 mm. It's unlikely that we will beat 2012 but it looks like the 2000 yearly record will be broken unless December turns out to be very dry.

The wettest autumn here was also 2000 with 579.8 mm. For  autumn 2019 to beat that, November would have to record 247.5 mm which is not impossible but very unlikely as it would make it the wettest calendar month on record.

The wettest year was 2012 with 1392.1 mm so November and December would need a combined total of 326.4 mm to beat it. Again not impossible but it would take two more very wet months.

Not on the same lines but the number of times in one year anyone has recorded over 100 mm in 1 month

I ask this as I am already over 100 mm for this month and I have already had 3 months, so thus far 4 this year. I have never recorded that before (only 15 years data) and I am fairly certain it never occurred in the RAF Finningley data sheets 1942/3-1995 but I will double check them over the weekend.

In a record starting in 1977; 2007 and 2012 both recorded 7 months with more than 100mm of rain here. There have been 6 so far this year with November looking likely to be the 7th so a possible record even if December is only average ( the average over the last 30 years in December is 115 mm ).

This is the first time we've recorded six months with rainfall over a 100mm. It's fairly common to have a least one month with a hundred mm. Sort of funny now when the theory was that rivers would dry up and never flow again with Jon Craven standing in dry bed during country file. He went back in 2007 and couldn't get near it. Generally though the rainfall amounts here have been pretty steady.

Pity I don't have the records now going back to 1955 it would have been interesting too see how often we got large daily amounts of rain.

I have also recorded 4 months over 100mm.

June 141.9mm

August 152.6mm

September  104.1mm

October 159.5mm

November is currently on 52.3mm, so a good chance we could reach 5 months.

Since 1980, the wettest Autumn on record here was 2000 on 296.3mm. This Autumn has already recorded 335.4mm so that record is long gone.

Locally, Hull Pearson Park recorded 294.2mm in Autumn 2000 and has a record of 359.4mm in 1880, so I imagine we have a good crack at the wettest for at least 173 years as the records there stretch back to 1847.

The wettest year here was 1980 on 831.7mm. 2019 is currently on 703.8mm so unless the remainder of the year is very wet it looks unlikely we'll beat that.

Months with above 100mm of rain aren't that common here, with four months in one year being the maximum (2012). 2019 has seen two such months so far (September and October) and there have only been 10 in the last decade.

Just had a very quick look at met office data for my closest station at Bradford which lists several years with 5 months +100mm in a year.

2002 has 6 months +100mm

2012 the worst with 8 months +100mm with 3 of those months +150mm

Ironically previous to September there have only been 3 months +100mm in the 3 years to that date,i think that is the least in the 110 year of records

Not where I live but sadly a lot where the river Don is . A minor stream is flooded but no property affected 2 miles from here.

I've managed to dig out the data from the Finningley data sheets 1942-1995.

As I suggested there are no years with 4 months recording over 100 mm of rainfall. One with 3 in 1970 and 6 with 2 months in one year. A total of 33 occasions in all those years, so a pretty infrequent occurrence in those 53 years.

Hi PIT .Down here in Dorset I’m already on 448mm for the autumn so far.

We're up 409.6 mm right now just 27.4 mm off a new record. This could well fall today circuit will go before the end of the month and then the next target will be the wettest month recorded for November which is 214.5 mm of rain in 1978. I can't see this being broken though.

Wow over 400mm that's pretty insane we've had 251mm here since the end of September home counties area which is an unusually high amount for here in just 7 weeks.

Only 6 days on and we're now on 390.6mm for the Autumn, that's 217% of the seasonal average and almost 100mm above Autumn 2000. I think its safe to say we've cleared 1880 aswell, so we're at the wettest for at least 173 years.

Still 16 more days to go aswell.

As of today we have reached 159.2 mm for the month is bringing the total for the autumn to 452.9 mm a new record. The record for November is 171.4 mm which from this morning's GFS looked easily to be beat. However the model has one now for a dry outlook for most. Could be a glitch it's quite a switch but it still looks like 171.4 mm is certainly under threat still as there is plenty of time left.

Well after unexpected heavy showers overnight we are now up to 168.2 mm for November. That brings autumn rainfall to 461.9 mm of rainfall. So now knocking on the door of a new record for November. The radar doesn't really show how heavy some of the showers have been.

Currently on 495.5 mm for the autumn here so it looks unlikely that the 579.8 mm of autumn 2000 will be reached but it's already the second wettest autumn, and season of any name, on record with two weeks to go.

163.1 mm so far in November so it would have to remain unsettled for the rest of the month to beat 211.7 mm in November 2000. It is however the wettest first half of any month on my records which began at this site in 1977, the previous record for the first half of a month was 148.1 mm in June 2012. The first half of December 1965 may have been equally as wet, or wetter, as I recorded 125.5 mm at a site a few miles away but about 35% drier than here.
