Looks like another dream day on the slopes of Katschberg.

Morning all, overnight the cold front moved slowly through and brought 25 cm of fresh snowfall. Now in the same Pm airmass that's covering the British Isles. A trough now over Bavaria and into NW Austria now bringing a further spell of snow to the region followed by a period of blizzard conditions as lower 850mb temps move into the Eastern Alps. Nice watching all this unfold on the snow radar.

Hi C,

Looks fantastic. So a few snowflakes should fall by Friday, right.?.. then warm over the weekend and then could be some cold coming during the next week. How do you see it?

The look from the other side  /from mid January though/

Forecasts are shaping up nicely for some widespread cold and snowfall across the entire Alps, kicking off next Wednesday 26th Feb and lasting well into the first week of March. The general theme has been showing its hand in both GFS and ECM model output for some days now, and certainly the snow event for next Weds is now into the more reliable 5-day time-frame. Here's the GFS 500hPa, 850hPa temps and precipitation forecasts:

1535204519_GFS500Wed26Feb13_00.thumb.png.dd4a3c250d38022ca1bc939cb21e4a8f.png488151821_GFS850Wed26Feb13_00.thumb.png.17daf47b9deb170d147b7f40a891a91d.png906640603_GFSPrecipWed26Feb13_00.thumb.png.87832298d7e815a55e9483bc12eed254.png

And zooming in using Netweather Alps charts shows the precipitation, 850hPa temps and SLP forecasts in more detail. Generally freezing level will be down to around 600m, but look at the squeeze on the isobars - that could produce some high winds and unpleasant conditions in the western Alps.

And then it's on to Sun 1st March for another possible snow event. So all-in-all, some good news going forward for replenishing snow depths as we head towards the tail end of the season.

Yep, 18c here over the weekend but a reasonably prolonged return to winter is on the cards.

L'hiver 2019-20 se caractérise par une douceur générale remarquable, qui prédominante depuis fin novembre. Du côté des précipitations, après un début...

Météo France have updated their snow depth analysis, which shows that the situation is varying degrees of poor across France below 1700m. This confirms my perception, living at the low altitude of 500m.

Having said that, in the Alps above 2000m, the snow depths are actually okay in many places. And the kind of stations that are actually visited by Brits often have lifts going above that altitude.

Now just 24 hours out from the decent Alps snow event I posted about last Saturday 22nd and comparing the GFS 500hPa chart I posted then with this morning's 0z update shows it was a pretty good effort from GFS at 4 days out:

Sat 22nd for 26th: 134936017_GFS500Wed26Feb13_00.thumb.png.a012fbc783d8733ff721fdb27b5d1a80.png Tue 25th for 26th: 540012980_GFS50025FebforWed26Feb13_00.thumb.png.e0bfdb483e4830d31b4ce84f31610190.png

Some decent amounts of snowfall expected over the next 48 hours (Wed 26th/Thur 27th) according to the Arpege forecast this morning:

Still too warm for snow down here but plenty of thunder and lightning alongside the rain tonight, which was unexpected, especially for the time of year.

Annecy nearly went its first (I think?) winter without lying snow but we have 2cm this morning with just a couple of days of winter left to spare. Unsure of the ground temperature, but it actually managed to settle at a rather warm 4.5c, which of course means that it's also melting quite fast.

(fully aware that I'm not at a relevant altitude for skiing, but we share the same weather systems, and in any case the France thread in the international forum is very much dead)

The snow duly fell yesterday 26th Feb. Here's a some images from a couple of resorts in the French Alps showing the day before (25th) compared to how it looks this morning:

And the immediate outlook for today through to next week published this morning by PlanetSki:

THURSDAY 27th FEBRUARY

There is a slight lull in the weather to start the day, but things will change sharply in the afternoon.

“A new storm will roll into the Alps on Thursday bringing further heavy snow across the western and northern Alps in particular,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski. This time the rain/snow limit will start very low but will rise to between 1000m and 1500m in places late in the day and overnight. However, many enclosed or internal Alpine valleys (e.g. the Swiss Valais) will see snow continuing to low levels well into Thursday night. The wind will then become very strong again later on Thursday, gusting to hurricane force at altitude. The weather will improve for a time on Friday, by which point there will be snowfall totals in some northern French and western Swiss resorts in the region of 70-110cm, at least at altitude. Looking a bit further ahead, the weather in the Alps will remain changeable with further snow for many areas late in the weekend and into next week.“

NTRODUCTION It has been one of the snowiest weeks of the season so far in the Alps with several resorts reporting more than a metre of snowfall in the past seven days, and even where they have not had that much, most have had good snowfalls. The snow has kept falling almost every day, with just a weekend lull when temperatures also got rather warm, before the next storm clouds moved in.

Just had the best two weeks of the season for snow conditions in the Austrian Alps. Plenty of fresh snowfall for resorts at 1000m and above.. lucky that most of the snow has fallen at night with sunshine during the day.

I'm in Val Cenis, French Alps, with friends this week for our annual trip to the resort. Weather wise it's turning into an up and down sort of week, with glorious sunshine Saturday and Sunday, cold and snowy Monday with FL 900m, snow again today but expected to turn to rain in the village at 1,450m later as temps climb to +6C. But back to warm sunshine Weds and Thurs although temps in the village reaching +12C.

The resort borders Italy and it's very notable how quiet the resort is. With Italy in lock-down there's not the usual number of visitors from that country, and it looks as if many French and Dutch have cancelled their plans to come here this week (although plenty of Brits here). Can't say I blame those pulling out - it was a matter of discussion between my friends as we're all 60+, but we're here now and just taking all the recommended precautions. Anyway, a few pics from around the mountain. The first is the piste front, and the second and third taken up on the mountain that you can see in the distance on the first pic.

Love those photos BW, almost makes me envious, but I had 30+ years of great skiing, so enjoying other folks ski piccs is very enjoyable. Hope you stay well all of you.

A rather sorry end to the season. Just a few skiers out today before closure. Most mountain huts now with shutters up. Sad picture really, especially when next weekend promises the best spring snow conditions of the season with a rare continental arctic flow to develop. Overall been a good season in Austria, especially for resorts above 1000m. Lower resorts like many , especially, in France have suffered by the extreme mild winter.

The state governments in Austria @jules216 make their own decisions as a rule. I know the local Salzburgerland state acted swiftly to enforce the closures, albeit at very short notice to the hotel and pub owners. Tirol may have been the last one. All very surreal in the resorts. Should have been very busy this week as the conditions are marvellous and a super cold blast soon to develop in the mountains.  Totally , no one to be seen !  Just have to wait for next season all being well.

Sorry to hear of your cancellation.  More sad because of the fantastic conditions presently in Austrian higher resorts. Hope you get your fix next season . Stay well.

Ischgl was on my short list this season. Maybe just as well I ended up in the 3 Valleys, France, instead.

Criminal investigation at Austria ski resort where hundreds were infected

Prosecutors launch investigation into allegations initial infection was hidden from the authorities

A criminal investigation has been launched in Austria into allegations an initial coronavirus infection was covered up at a ski resort that has since been identified as a major centre of the European outbreak.

Hundreds of infections in Germany, Iceland, Norway and Denmark have been traced back to the resort of Ischgl in the Tyrolean Alps.

Austrian authorities are already facing questions after it emerged the resort was allowed to remain open for a week after the alarm was raised.

But if the claims are true, it appears the outbreak in Ischgl might have been stopped even earlier, after Austrian prosecutors on Tuesday opened an investigation into allegations a suspected infection in the resort was covered up as early as February.

According to the allegations, a member of staff at a local business was suspected to be infected with the virus but the case was not reported to to the health authorities.

"The allegations are so serious they have to be investigated immediately," a spokesman for the Tyrol regional government said.

The new allegations come days after a text message emerged which appeared to show local politicians knew about the outbreak in Ischgl as early as March 9 but urged tourist businesses to hush it up.

The resort was not closed until March 13 — a full week after the Icelandic authorities warned their Austrian counterparts they were seeing a spate of coronavirus infections in people returning from skiing holidays there.

Ischgl is known for its raucous après-ski nightlife. The resort brings in artificial snow every year to prolong the ski season until May and drinking games continue into the early hours of the morning at its bars.

But those drinking games are believed to have helped spread the coronavirus. In particular, the game of “beer pong” — in which contestants take turns to spit the same ping-pong ball into a beer glass — is believed to have contributed to the spread.

The business involved in the latest allegations has not been named. Previous concerns have centred on the popular Kitzloch bar, where a barman tested positive for the virus on March 7.

Bernhard Zangl, the owner of Kitzloch, has complained that it is unfair to blame his bar for the outbreak.

“Our staff also had to be infected by some one, since they are only here during the season,” he told T Online news.

A text message in which a local MP urged Mr Zangl to close the bar until “grass had grown over the affair” was published last week.

Ischgl has been under lockdown since March 14, with around 1,000 seasonal workers and a few Austrian tourists trapped in the resort.

“Essentially, it’s a disaster for Ischgl,” Werner Kurz, the town’s mayor, told Germany's Spiegel magazine. “We aren't talking about the economic consequences yet. We will overcome them, just as we have been able to overcome flooding and avalanches in the past.”

A mild weekend in the mountains with a slight thaw. Current temp is 5 c in village. Now waiting for the cold front to arrive later this evening. Tomorrow will see a big drop in temp , down to -10c  in the village with a strong NEly and blizzard conditions at times.. I for one am excited with that prospect but I am snow mad.
