Heavy rainfall expected over parts of the Alps in the Next 72 hrs. Some snowfalls on the highest mountains but rain and potential flooding the key features.

Crikey the above link for SevereWeatherEU is showing heavy rainfall indeed.

The following graphic shows the snow cover in the Alps for 18th Oct. (current) and I just viewed that and thought the Alps were looking much healthier, then I saw your post @J10 So it will certainly be interesting to see the graphic over the coming days and how it may change now that we are nearing the end of the predicted rainfall for 19 -21 October.

One day later and the map for 19th October is showing some difference, looks like the Alps snow cover has reduced albeit not by a huge amount by the 19th. A few days of images and heavy rainfall could show a different picture entirely! We shall see.

Great to see the new thread starting up as we begin to look forward to the coming season.

Kitzbühel, Austria off to an early start and keeping up its record of being the first non-glacier resort in the Alps to open:

"Kitzbühel will begin the winter season this weekend, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th October and will be the first non-glacier ski area in the Alps to open for the 2019/20 season."

However this was only possible thanks to ‘snow farming' as they had stored snow from last winter over the summer in huge piles under cover to protect it from melting. It's only one run and two lifts open, but they hope to keep these open for skiing every day now. Here's some pics, first on Resterkogel on Saturday and the view down to the town below; and today's webcam:

Finally the view from the Cime Caron webcam today (22nd Oct) looking down on the highest parish in the Alps - Val Thorens at 2,300m:

I think this is a way forward esp as often there is loads of snow falling after the seasons shut in the Alps.

Even if it just does a few runs in most resorts, it starts to bring in an income and skiers can get some skiing in. Esp as before the 1st/2nd week of Dec its only locals ish that ski.

Given the climate trends, resorts will need to be creative to maximise their business, this seems like good common sense.

Translated this shows the rainfall in 48hrs to 21 Oct.

Slightly at a tangent for a mountain thread I know but massive rainfall in Beziers in the past 24hrs. (242mm)

516mm in 48 hours!! :shok: They'll be wishing it was a bit later in the season and had fallen as snow. La Croix de Bauzon in the Ardeche is typical of the wonderful little ski resorts that pepper the higher ground right across Europe. Here's an image from the webcam yesterday and then the same piste during the winter:

Sking/snowboarding.

Who is heading off and where?

Well we were going to wait until Easter like we did this year, until we discovered our holidays don't match up. So now looking at driving the motorhome to Schladming, Austria for Xmas. Never been there before and a bit lower than we'd have liked to be more sure of snow that early, but we were finding it difficult to book a campsite this late. That's now done, but still got ferries to arrange.

Looks good!

As you point out, just need mother nature to play ball.

I'm ready to head off asap. Euro trip pre Xmas then eyeing up somewhere further afield.

Fingers crossed.

Heading off to St Moritz with Club Med on the 29th March. Leading my school trip with 50 others. Last (This) year at the same time Serre Chevalier was perfect for the time of year, height etc. So St Moritz should given its heights be amazing..... can’t wait

Lots of snow forecast for the French Alps this week, or at least the Northern section - the weather can be quite different in PACA. The snowline looks to be below 2000m throughout, and sometimes a lot lower than that.

The first general snow cover for the higher areas in the Jungfrau this morning after a slight cover 2 days ago.

Also the work on the new twin gondola out of Grund (near Grindelwald) seems on time. The Mannlichen side is due to opne for this Christmas I believe.

I'm not sure why the usual web cams for the Lauberhorn race site are not working fully at the moment.

The latest info is only in German though.

November off to a great start. The Tignes official website reporting 30cms at 2,100m and 50cms at 3,000m and posting these pics:

Lot's more snow over the coming few days according to this hi-res model forecast of cumulative snowfall up to Sunday 10th Nov:

anim_eve4.gif

And with both ECM and GFS models forecasting continued low pressure incursions into Europe over the 10 day period the short-term prospects will hopefully be bringing a smile onto resort officials faces. As an example, here's a great chart from this morning's 06z run for 16th Nov:

Edit: I just had to add this great pic from Cauterets in the Pyrenees:

Snowline as low as 1200m here, today, and some of the showers were pretty heavy, so there will be considerable amounts of snow at medium altitudes that should stick around for a while in temperatures that are cool for early November.

This week  - pretty cool, grey and dry here in the north western Alps, but that looks to be the exception, with much wetter conditions closer to the Mediterranean as well as further east.

I cant believe how much snow has fallen in the Alps, even down into the valleys, in fact more than some winters, also up in Scandi land, up to 10c below average for the first 10 days of Nov.
In Katsberg as example still forecasting another meter of snow  in the next few days.
sods law says by the start of Dec to Xmas it will have all gone, but compared to previous years, wow.
Also makes a mockery of the Seasonal models that said  NW Europe would be a high % above average.

Not as much snow for the Jungfrau area, it never has the huge totals some parts of the Alps get. However some runs opening this weekend

Not sure about the rest of the Alps but in spite of enough snow, possibly even down to the village, this info
