What is amazing me is the length of time the gusts remain at 60mph. Way into the early hours from 6pm.

What is unusual is the duration of the strongest winds, 6-9 hours is a prolonged bout for us down here!

Only joking of course but I might be tempted to take the short drive to my favoured viewing spots at Rock a Nore in Hastings and just a mile or so away on the seafront in St Leonards on Sea. Checking my camera batteries in the morning to hopefully get some good photos.

Well GFS seems to be increasing the forecast wind speeds rather than decreasing them nearer the event - opposite of what is usually the case.  Norwich now peaking at 41mph gusting 75mph at 3pm - about the time the cold front moves through. Pretty unusual windspeeds for this part of the world. It will be interesting to see what the sustained speeds actually are. I find anything over 40mph and you start to hear that 'roar' which is synonymous of damaging storms.

Met Office video forecast going for 55-65 mph gusts (70-80 coasts). Very windy but hardly the scale which some on here are talking about. You’d think the apocalypse was coming!

Agreed but 70 miles an hour during the daylight hours is damn dangerous. The 100 miles per hour was at 2-4am in the morning and yes I am also a veteran of the great storm. If the wind is as strong as they say then that will be a significant storm.

In the 87 storm damaged caused was quite variable. Some areas completely trashed and others less so. 

Remember well looking out our bedroom window to see mature trees falling everywhere. We had no electricity  for nearly a week.  Took a car battery into work and charged it up so we could watch TV for a couple of hours each night on a little portable. Fortunately we did not rely on electricity for heating.  

No mobile phone nor did the landline work. So there was one benefit.

Everyone itching to go all electric to save the planet? Always nice in these circumstances to have Plan B if you can.

65 mph gusts will definitely cause damage in inland areas. Avg windy winter days here are 40-50 mph so we are well above "normal" territory.

Plus some models have been suggesting 70-75 mph inland - so it's the met office that have been downplaying it, rather than people here over exaggerating.
