Its been pretty dismal so far and I think we have a few more weeks to get through bar the odd dry crisp day. I'm hopeful for a colder Jan/Feb and some snow opportunities....it cant get much worse....can it?

The M23 is closed due to flooding from a river bursting its banks. 5 mile queues, nasty for people needing to get to gatwick.

I have been on the Facebook Thurrock page and learned of flooding to the lane at ASDA/Uniserve Industrial Estate at Thurrock Park Way, Tilbury. There are also information on how rain is affecting the rivers and riverside footpaths. The below is from the Facebook Thurrock page.  This information won't be found on the Met Office website or the Environmental Agency.

Quote

⚠️ The rivers are reacting quickly and rising sharply in response to the rainfall. The forecast is for further light rain during the day Friday 20 December 2019. Further showers are forecast for tomorrow, but these are not expected to be heavy. Take care on riverside footpaths and don't put yourself in unnecessary danger. We are closely monitoring the situation with Met Office and Environmental Agency ⚠️

11.4mm more rain in the last 24 hours here. The local river Brett is starting to look threatening as it's already over its banks in places and it takes around 15 hours for rainfall in the upper catchment areas to reach the stretch that runs through Hadleigh - so the peak not reached yet. Not helping is that maintenance on the river has been woeful lately - that large fallen branch straddling the river has been there for 12 months now.

We've had 23mm in the last 36 hours and out here on the Essex coast which is one of the driest areas in the country, I think we've had approx 63mm in the last 8 days - a very wet winter spell by any standard.

Pouring here again now after a 2 hour dry spell from the soaking today.

Saw the local farmer again this morning, worst he’s seen it in many years and he’s really concerned as it’s only December.

I’m Praying for a dry period, but have a feeling this rain is in for the long haul this winter.

Had 17.5mm today and 10mm from Wednesday night into Thursday's rain. So 27.5mm altogether in the last 48 hours. Nearby fields are like rivers here with even a couple of swans now swimming on them where the river and stream has burst its banks combined with the quantity of rain obviously. Local tesco entrance flooded a bit too.

It's certainly been a bit wet in this region but nothing exceptional. Not as wet as 2015/15 winter, it will drain away. If we get the same deluges in the next 2/3 weeks then yes, we will have problems.

long range winter forecasts have been so far spot on with autumn and winter.

Well that was a nice wake up call this morning...torrential rain slamming against the window. Quite a feisty spell of weather. Now nice and calm.

Here's the band of rain courtesy of an occluded front moving NE across the Region. I'm under a red echo and it's hammering down atm with a gusty wind.

Mainly because winters just begun? Winter 2015/16 was much wetter than average for northern and western areas but not for the south east. Last time I've seen flooding worse than this was the winter of 2013/14 Its been a pretty exceptional spell of wet weather. I had a few photos of the flooding back then but don't think I've still got them which is a shame.

Once again we as humans ignored the warnings of 2013/2014 when we had major flooding in Surrey and surrounding areas... We now find ourselves 5 years on on the cusp of more severe flooding.. I think if we continue this weather pattern for much longer I think we may have some serious issues.. More rain forecast this weekend and next week..

Guess what.. As I type this its absolutely chucking it down.. I didn't think the showers would make it this far inland but they are..

Yes, you are right. Meant to say 13/14. Time flies.

Figures for South London that Winter :

Nov 55.6mm 99%

Dec 91.0 mm 162%

Jan  141.5mm 257%

Feb 78.9mm 232%

We have a way to go to match those.

It really was an Atlantic onslaught that Winter..

Didn't see one flake of snow that winter but I have to say the storms kept me more than happy apart from the fact that people had flooding in there homes ofcourse.

Anyway had some heavy showery rain last night which gave 3.5mm now just sunny and breezy.

Someone caught it crossing the M25! Those bits of debris flying around are fence panels and sheds
