Lasting snow usually comes to the higher tops in October. Often mid month on the Cairngorms and late month to the Nevis range. It has been as late as December and as early as early as the second week of September. Ironically that early event in the Cairngorms was in 1976 and saved the last remaining snow patch in Scotland on Braeriach from melting following the amazingly hot Summer.

Forecast for Ben Macdui next week. Not likely to be anything like enough accumulation to become lasting but a bit of drifting can do wonders.

It was in the top three for poorest ever snowsports season in the Cairngorms. 

They were only open for 31 snow sports days out of a possible 140! Pretty bleak and the natural snowfall didn’t arrive in any volume until February! (I was there at the end of February in shorts and t-shirt basking in 17c and sunshine - opposite of what I was hoping for!)

There was plenty of snow around in March and April.

 

I am back up again at the end of February...hopefully plenty of snow this time! Last Winter was very unusual.

Historic is now the words being used for the snowstorm over montana

They are predicting winds of 30-40mph and gusts up to 60-70mph with all the snow in the US Northwest.  It should be an epic storm that produces crazy drifting. They even warned for 6 foot waves on Flathead Lake. At least it should all melt back in the days afterwards at the inhabited lower altitudes. However, lower down they expect lots of damage because trees are still in leaf and the snow will generally be wet and sticky. They say it will be the worst since a (very similar - check models?) 1934 September storm
