Total totals index. Thunderstorm potential.

It takes in to account several atmospheric parameters like 850 - 500hpa temperature lapse rates / moisture.

< 43 stable conditions

> 55 severe thunderstorms/tornadoes

etc.

Thank you! This is very helpful.

Evening all!

The past week (Last Wednesday and today) has been fantastic for big time wintry showers - wet snow, thunder, lightning, graupel, hail, gusty winds and torrential downpours!

You can’t beat the heat/thunderstorms/convection of Summer but Winter still delivers great cloudscapes!

We had one solitary rumble of thunder in Kingsbridge just after 8. Accompanied by some really loud hail for about 10 seconds!

Lightning further west caused some damage - a house in Plymouth was set on fire after being struck, plus numerous homes in Cornwall were without power earlier on.

So much for plumetastic summer storms, all the fun of the fair is in February it seems

Here is the video of the positive CG I saw from Bedford that struck somewhere near Leicester and another bright strike:

You're pretty special if you can determine that it was a +CG from that. Very few strikes are +CG, so its more likely to be -CG.

Well I got a cheeky tea-time flash, followed by three minutes of hail and wind.  According to the five second thunder rule, the bolt should have landed on my nose - but it was about five miles away according to lightningmaps and I agree.

Both strikes could of been cloud to cloud actually ?‍♂️

A large squall line will move across the country tomorrow with a possibility of a tornado forming. More here

Interesting. I wonder how much lightning it will produce.

Any line convection today is likely to be a lot shallower than past events - these are vertical cross-sections from model output for the squall lines associated with Storm Ciara (left), Storm Dennis (middle) and today (right). This is, of course, based on model data so may not have captured the vertical structure perfectly, but gives an idea at just how shallow today's convection will be vs previous events, as @Mapantz has alluded to...

The squall line just passed, and it was exciting. The rain and wind was not that bad, but there were some very quick cloud motions and almost looked like rotation.

Second squall has developed.

Edit: The second squall has now merged with the main squall, which is looking very strong.

Yep! Each time been 1 flash/rumble and hail storms had so many near misses last year. More than making up for it already!
