That was a loud one wasn’t it! The cat nearly jumped out her fur

12.9mm of rain so far...8.9mm of that has fallen in the last hour

I sympathize fully - I jumped out of mine too   I think the problem was it was a very weak and somewhat quiet storm; there were a few flashes and growls but not much else which lured me in to a false sense of security. Then I just happened to look out the window as the sky lit up followed by instant thunder that made the ground shake; I was not prepared for that at all - that wasn't fair! That was the last I saw and heard before it all went quiet bar the rain which up until about 15 minutes ago was torrential - your observations don't surprise me.

I genuinely have no reason to complain, considering I had a total of 11 Thunderstorms this year...

11?

I thought I was lucky to see one.

The shows of lights has stopped, showing that this was, obviously, not a distant lightning storm.

Now I feel utterly embarrassed. Great. :oldgood:

Oh well. Going to Palma next week anyway, so I shouldn't complain about anything. There are likely to be thunderstorms the week I'm staying there which is nice.

Day 2 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Tue 15 Oct 2019 - 05:59 UTC Wed 16 Oct 2019

ISSUED 19:35 UTC Mon 14 Oct 2019

ISSUED BY: Dan

The remnants of the upper trough over SW England / Biscay on Tuesday morning will drift slowly northeastwards through the day, providing the focus for a few scattered heavy showers across southern England and the English Channel. A few isolated lightning strikes are possible.

Elsewhere, the next Atlantic frontal system will sweep a band of cloud and rain eastwards during the second half of the forecast period, followed by showers into western Ireland late in the night as the largescale upper vortex gradually approaches.

I do have a thing for Mallorca, stayed in Palma (Palmanova nr Magaluf lol) and while next to one of the tackiest bits of the whole island (and during a stormy April) there was a kind of Balearic charm that drew me back with the O/H the following September.

The second visit we stayed in Soller to the north of the island and there seemed to always be a storm in the evenings just beyond the hills out to sea. Could see the peripheral flashes late into the evening. They were really ferocious storms. (Menorca would have been a great spot to watch them I bet).

Theres a town called Deia near Soller in the hills. It’s beautiful on a clear day. We spent an evening at an open air bar there and literally watched the sun melt into the horizon over the course of a couple of hours, and I practically fell in love with that spot  (there was definately tequila in the beer!)

Sadly three people lost their lives in a huge storm to the east of the island during the week we were there. Washed into the sea in a taxi .

The weather gives, and it takes away...

Oh well may have been a bust but a cool animation of the storms from France nevertheless.. They looked very impressive for a time atleast and that line of downpours looks cool too. Ignore that water noise haha. :yahoo:

That is quite a bust given an amber warning was given at short notice.

I guess making a precise prediction of where highly developmental thunderstorms will track was always going to be difficult but they probably didn't want the risk of getting it badly wrong a subtle shift west would of probably ensured that alot of the south east would of had big impacts.. :oldgood:

Is it a common theme for Autumn...with Storms being more likely on the coasts instead of inland?

Something to do with sea temps causing convergence and cooling aloft causing more extreme differential between temps at the extreme top and bottom of storm clouds ... I think

Thank you, that explains why they're dying out just before they reach me!
