Drove down to Newhaven in the end. I was heading towards Eastbourne but the rain was that bad I had to stop. Clearing now, picture doesn’t give it justice - beautiful red!

Can you explain? I don't really know that much about the weather compared to other people here so what effect would nocturnal cooling have on the storms/rain?

I believe it would steepen lapse rates somewhat, and perhaps give any cells a second wind.

You should do. I will be very surprised if you don't.

Just saw a (my first tonight) very big flash light up most of the sky to the south of me in Folkestone. I have yet to hear any Thunder despite having the window open a bit.

Storm just reaching dover now but the rest really is moving east. So the coast will see most of the action. Warmer outside than it felt earlier. Very close

Out fishing for the night  near Harlow. Gone very hazy here after so heavy rain.

Think we need to keep a close eye on the line of showers currentlyover the IOW

There track and timing is in line with the forecast main event over the London area??

I’m just up the road in Hawkinge so I’ll have a listen out now you’ve said that!

Another flash and now thunder - I'd imagine you're close enough to have heard that

Ran upstairs to look out to the south after I last posted and saw the big flash and heard the rumble. Saw 3 flashes in a minute...rain is picking up!

Nocturnal cooling can fire up night time storms if there is a plume of hot upper air (typically a Spanish plume here) condensing as the surrounding air cools and the cap weakens. I doubt this will happen, as there is no real juicy air or widespread Mid level CAPE to fire things off. During the night of 3rd July 2015, there was around 2500-3000j/kg of it, and similar values earlier this year on the hottest day ever. Unfortunately the latter all exploded too far E aswell and only the SE and East Anglia saw the epicness of it.

Taken from the netweather storm forecast

"Upper trough moving in from the west will engage frontal boundary "

Is that what we're seeing cause the line of shows near the IOW?

And then only for about half hour!

I will be surprised if those showers off of the south coast don't produce any lightning.
