31.8°C here now, very hot, but clouds are building up fast which hopefully puts a lid on things.

Alot of cloud and showery outbreaks in places now, knocking the rapid temperature rises in places across the SE.

I think 40c may have been achievable somewhere had this not happened quite so soon

We will struggle to break the all time record now I think given the current conditions.

Is that an official site ??

Metcheck. I gather from elsewhere it could be close to that there. It’s going to be close. Next hour will be crucial.

38.4 C at Hereford. So agonizingly close to the record if it is the peak. https://www.metcheck.com/WEATHER/live_weather_map.asp#

Metcheck readings are meaningless. It could be somebody's cheap AWS in full sun for all we know. Only official stations are worth bothering with.

Worth noting that temperatures in SE England haven't been peaking until 17:00 - 17:30 the past few days. Still an hour or so of heating left to push Cambridge and other spots over the record.

Won’t be seeing it here in Cambridge - cloud rolled in and a storm cell approaching. Whatever the max was a while ago 37.5-38c will be tops here. Still an incredible day!

The met just tweeted 38.1 reached in Cambridge. Looking like the record will stay in tact .

Northolt also on 38c.All we need is 0.6c in a prolonged sunny period. It could still go.Although unlikely. For me,like 2003 it will be a station nearby that doesn't record on the hour if we are to beat the record.

Northolt exact reading was 37.6C at 4pm. I don't think there are many manual stations around these days. But there is Cambridge Botanic Gardens: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/uk-synoptic-and-climate-stations

Conspiracy theorists might like to note that the Bedford weather station was running dead level with Cambridge at 1pm (35.5C) and then mysteriously stopped reporting for the rest of the day. A potential record missed out on?

Also broken my own backyard record with a maximum of 36.6, now down to 35.1 as the cloud rolls in. The nearest official station at Reading University peaked at 36.3, just short of the 36.4 recorded there in August 2003.

The hottest July day on record here ( since 1963 ) and second only to August 3rd 1990. A sunny morning followed by increasing cloud during mid afternoon which brought a few spots of rain around 1445 g.m.t. Had it not been for this cloud I think it likely the overall record would have fallen as it was only 0.3c short of it. Sunny intervals again after the slight shower but the temperature couldn't quite make it back to where it was before.

At 1700 g.m.t

Temp; 29.2c

Max today; 32.1c

Min last night; 16.5c

Grass min; 12.9c

Rainfall from 0800-1700 g.m.t; Trace

Sunshine today so far; 8.96 hrs

Mean wind speed; 8 mph S

Highest gust today; 28 mph SE at 1055 g.m.t

5 oktas Ac and Cu

Vis; 80 km.

Mean Wind: 17mph E
Max Gust: 25mph

Dry and exceptionally hot. Sunny until mid afternoon then cloud steadily thickened, just taking the edge off the temperature, which still reached an all-time high for this location. Maximum 36.6, minimum 19.2. Wind light SE.

Inland site at Morriston hit 29.4c and if anything felt warmer than Tuesday due to lighter winds. A mostly sunny day with light patchy cloud daytime, this clearing by mid afternoon to give a long sunny spell.

More general cloud this evening.
