Yes, but your missing the point, people getting interested in weather makes them more likely to become meteorologists, also, i thought you were worried about climate change, if we suddenly had an unexpected downturn in temperatures (not talking ice age scenarios) over the pole and an upturn in sea ice growth, that would actually make us (perhaps temporarily) less susceptible to the effects of climate change, so therefore shouldn't one actually be wishing for events that would probably lead to at the very least a scenario where we have more time to make provisions.

:blink2: Rather odd logic ^

What I find surprising/concerning is that a few on here who profess a degree of interest in weather/climate appear to have little regard for its impact.

Does that include professionals who go storm chasing / wanting or is this yet again selective judgmentalism?.

The salient phrase in my post is 'little regard'

Being a professional doesn't exclude being a nutter as well. Believe me I've met a few

I'm wanting some dry mild south westerly winds now to dry my land out

Sick of this cool wet weather.

I'd rather it be mild and sunny tbh

Then our average winter weather in February

i have thought that..we see people on here flying half way round the world and then travel the length of the USA watch storms..and then moan about people's carbon footprint and climate change

In any case the reason i would like freezing weather all year around is because of the effects on wildlife - have a phobia of moths and spiders and it would kill off all of those like permanently - i hate insects.

Of course the bees would die off permanently too ,  and nothing would grow anyway and then as a result of that , humans are gone,  but if thats want you want ,

Just go and live on the north pole

Exactly - but you talk common sense and always get rounded on - there is so much hypocrisy sometimes its unreal.

Well, I suppose the lengthy period of dry weather we had (Since March-April 2018) had to be offset at some point (nature has a way of doing that). In fact, the more I look back at the last year and a bit, the more I realise how dry it was. Sure, we had short wet spells, but it was very dry on the whole.

That seems a distant memory now. The last month and some change has been seemingly endlessly wet, grey, cool and dull. I work outside and it has been so depressing. In fact, I struggle to remember a more wet and depressing period of weather in my 27 years of life....perhaps 2007 would trump it.

Still, it's so grim. Hopefully it changes soon.

Northern Hemisphere snow and ice thread has some great pics on it for those not following, after a surge in big snowfalls this month. It's been getting very interesting as N.H. snow extent looks like it could beat the previous autumn record high (2014)  and snow water equivalent is a whopping c.50% above normal. What with the (record?) hot Alaska/Beaufort and record cold and snow in USA and Scandinavia, something unusual seems to be happening.

Let's either have it very cold and foggy or moderate snow showers.

Or very mild and sunny.

Not cool and rain and cloudy

Here there has not been one dry day for 23 days now.

My land needs drainage work now

I love cold snowy days up here.

And even the hardest coldie.

Must admit unseasonably mild sunny weather  is better than cool wet cloudy days .

I've known some epic snowfalls come after a very mild spell 1995. For one

The UK is not a cold or snowy place.

Winters tend to range from cool to mild.

Winter doesn't start for another couple of weeks.

Realistic expectations.

Sick to death of this nearly 2 months of incessant low pressure, cloud, wind and rain. Gfs has 100mm+ in parts of the SW again in the next 10 days, so more flooding is certainly possible. Pattern change please, this is utterly tedious.

Another day, another set of dreadful model runs...

EC 12z is vile, just one low after another..

And breathe...

At least on the latest ecm run the jet seems on a more southerly path but we've seen trough disruption this month largely south eastwards over the country or near by but it seems a tall order to actually get into a 'real' cold air mass i.e. cold heights well to the north.

Personally I believe there are interesting times ahead, going by what Matt Hugo and Cohen, Simon lee and friends are seeing and saying over in twitter land.

Patients is required, hopefully it will turn out good for us.

Note - frequency is under 50 and OCGT is starting to come on stream (top right). That means the grid is struggling as renewables aren't cutting it so we have 55% supplied by gas with flu recycling and a tiny bit now from an old inefficient (OCGT) gas station, with no flue gas recycling, that the EU recently ruled we could not pay so much to sit on standby. If we are struggling now, what happens if and when we get snow and fog? I noticed OCGT come on three times last year (could have been more) but we've closed some more coal capacity since then (and more to go in March, I think).

http://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/

Edit - OCGT is up a touch more and the French interconnector has risen so frequency has lifted back on target. But running expensive OCGT still means the system is close to its limit. It's only Autumn.
