We had our first ground frost this morning. Today was also a nice day in general. Even got the grass and hedges cut. Doubt it will be for the last time though.

I should actually record a completely dry day tomorrow.

Today has been dry but a few overnight showers mean it doesn't actually go down as a dry day.

Lovely Autumn Sunday, coupled with a good drop in temps for the first half of the week is what a proper season should be like. A break from the rain, time to let nature show off. A far cry from the bleached landscape of summer 2018 thankfully.

Driving around Bradford and urban West Yorkshire yesterday, there were quite a few nearly bare trees, notably birches on this trip, and quite a lot of leaves visibly falling as I sat in traffic at times. It seemed to be about two weeks ahead of normal. Countering this slightly gloomy news, there seemed to be a lot more colour than normal in trees in leaf. Every now and then the displays were glorious shades of yellow, orange, crimson and pushing magenta - the sorts of colours you know won't reproduce in photos. Rural trees don't seem as far ahead so, hopefully, we'll have some lovely displays to come more widely next week. (Maybe urban trees suffered more stress from dry weather through the spring and summer?) Anyway, I was very impressed by the beautififul colours in places, even if some of it was on the floor at times.

It looks to be close to 2016 and 2018 in terms of pace of colour and leaf fall albeit both those years I would regard as above average. A good week of gales might strip them pretty quick though.

Going against the grain, another cold and wet day, temp 8c. North east England, the only place in the world without rising temps, lol.

Sunny before but now appearing to cloud over.  Dry but cold, about 9C which isn't very good for mid-October.

I’ve noticed the a lot of the smaller trees here have nearly lost all their leaves already but the larger the trees don’t seem to have lost that many yet.

Last autumn was much more colourful than this autumn so far. Then again, it seems like a slower start. Most of the trees where I’m currently sat in Berkshire are still green/early September shades of brown. Very few yellows and reds.

First day of the autumn when there has been a definate shift in overall feel of things - chilly in a word, with a cool northerly wind, combined with clear air. Temps have struggled to hit double figures for the first time this season - all very normal for mid October. Could do with some crisp cold mornings and air frosts, but alas there will be too much wind and cloud around for that over the coming nights.

Looking ahead- a mixed week, but thankfully some drier conditions in the near future - which will be a welcome respite from weeks of rain.

Cold but clear overnight, now sunny with some fair weather Cu. Difficult to read Liverpool AP but they reported 10C which again isn't very good for our supposed "Indian Summer".

Someone's turned the blowtorch on here. 24C yesterday, 23C today. Hurbanovo (holder of Slovakia's all-time highest temperature) got up to 26C.

28C in Serbia and Romania.

Yellow warnings for heavy rain issued for Friday and Saturday

12:00 Fri 25 23:59 Sat 26

Heavy rain beginning on Friday is expected to continue into Saturday which may bring transport disruption and flooding.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses

Rain is expected to arrive across parts of the UK during Friday and become heavy and persistent, this is especially true for high ground exposed to the strong southwesterly wind. There remains some uncertainty to the locations likely to see the highest rainfall totals. This rain is expected to continue falling in similar areas for around 24 hours. As such during this period 40-60 mm of rain is likely, with perhaps as much as 100 mm over higher ground.

Very cold day again, and unlike the sunny forecast it went overcast quickly as daylight appeared.

October 2019 has by far and away been the most boring month in my 12 years of weather records. No warm periods, nothing interesting, either frontal rain, drizzle or overcast and some of the most homogeneous temperatures possible in this country. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
