Saw 6 inches of snow in Hatfield, Hertordshire at the end of October 2008, so snow is certainly possible up here in October.

Indeed. We had snow cover at the end of Oct 2000 as well. So give or take it's roughly a once in ten years event to get snow cover in October around here.

Serious - you not kidding me? - i had snow durig the same spell, i was in a 2 month stay in Birmingham and we had an inch or so but never knew lowland areas in the South had those type of amounts.

About 3 inches on 30th October 2000. I believe the Pennines got more than 6 inches.

2008 was the only time i have seen snow in October, saw very cold and frosty in the school holidays 1988 but we know what kind of winter followed that.

Yeah. I was at university at the time. I was heading out to a friend's house and decided to watch the BBC weather forecast who said there would be 'A bit of sleetiness over the hills'. Then it snowed quite heavily all night. Yet 17 miles away in Harrow, where I'm from, there was nothing.

We actually had a bit of snowfall here in October last year. Didn't settle though and was quite brief from what I remember. Nothing after that until  a couple of times in January, with the only settling snow then occurring on the afternoon/evening of the 22nd, but was only a thin covering and was all but gone on the 24th. I remember the dates as we moved house on the 23rd, on which the snow stuck around for the day. So it was nice to have a bit of snow cover around  for the transition from the old house to the new, even if there wasn't loads of it. We missed out on the heavy snows which briefly affected the south of the country just over a week later though unfortunately. Hope we get something good this coming Winter though but as always only time will tell.

Yes. Snow briefly fell here in 08, 10 and 12 (only for about 5 minutes overnight in 2012) but October 2000 is the only time we got a proper settling.

Came right after a nasty low too which formed near Portugal and moved north.

Here July followed on from where June left off, August from where July left off, September from where August left off, and now October from where September left off. It's been awful. Absolutely sick of the rain.

Another 20.2mm of rain overnight taking us to 134.4mm in the last 13 days. That's more than we had during the entire winters of 2011/12, 2014/15 and 2018/19.

Looks like your making up for the prolonged dry spell you had!

At last a proper Autumn....the outlook is very seasonal. Crisp mornings,Atlantic showing it's presence, colours really developing in the countryside. Interesting weather at last, beats the tedium of Summer hands down in my opinion. Many will disagree though i feel!

Was going to say the same thing lol. The only crisp mornings I’ve had so far have not been from the Atlantic!
