Why in an SSW does the polar vortex go easterly.

Recommended Posts

Hi in an SSW the usual west-east winds are reversed in the polar vortex to east-west, can I know why, please? Thank you.

A warm welcome to Netweather. There are links to some good reading material in the Learning and Research area on this forum. In the Research section there are lots of papers about the Stratospheric Polar Vortex and Sudden Stratospheric Warmings. And in the Basics section maybe go to this link which lists sources of basic learning info.

Here's a couple of easy-to-understand papers included in the Research section mentioned above:

WHAT IS THE POLAR VORTEX AND HOW DOES IT INFLUENCE WEATHER?

What is a Polar Stratospheric Warming?

Thanks 🙂 I've been looking for a detailed article about the polar vortex, didn't know there was two! 😮
