showing some quite intense clouds building, Eastern Wales- looks like it's waiting to build into something spectacular ,

Yep, think I can see those in the distance looking towards the west from here in the West Midlands, and all I can say is they look VERY INTERESTING, areas to the N/NE, I would say keep a look out, because I haven't seen clouds like this for a long time.

Good luck to those in the north today! I have a quick question. Why does it seem like most thunderstorms in the UK are elevated lately? Ive seen it mentioned in all of the recent outbreaks, surface based stones never seem to come to fruition when they are forecast.

Primarily because there's a strong cap in place the past few days - so strong (and hot) that we set a new record for the highest 850mb temperature observed in the UK yesterday. Pretty much all of the thunderstorms in the past 7 days have been elevated, as you say, driven more by upper forcing than anything at the surface. These can still deliver large hail though, given the magnitude of CAPE and very steep mid-level lapse rates.

Currently 19c here - hope it’s about to go bang!! ⚡

My last thunderstorm was on 16th June.

It has arrived! Big rumbles and few flashes so far - great end to the hot spell here! All moving right over my house.

Wish it was night time though!

A rather unstable looking sky here this afternoon... And some quiet juicy looking towers starting to build to my east.

Very muggy and oppressive as well.

As always, fingers crossed, and good luck to everyone with this. ?️:oldgood:

Feel like I’m right on the boundary... to the east clear blue in the main. West towards wales, cloudy.

Cant see anything towards wales that looks all that threatening ATM. 6 miles west of Shrewsbury.

Ohh yeah makes more sense I thought they were from the sat images, they really looked interesting at one point, might be developing for up North.

Looking good! Let's hope that this is a precursor to them gradually transferring east as the day goes on.

They were real fast moving storms but intense and produced half inch hail in places

Yellow Lightning warning issued

15:02 Today 22:00 Today

Lightning may cause some impacts across Scotland

What to expect

  • Some short term loss of power or other utility services may occur
  • Possibly some damage to some buildings/structures

Recent developments suggest another surge of frequent lightning activity until Saturday evening affecting parts of western and central Scotland short-term, and perhaps eastern Scotland by this evening. Although heavy rain is possible, perhaps with locally 10-15mm inside an hour later today, lightning strikes seem the more likely hazard.

I must say, if I wasn't looking at the radar..blitzortung etc,.. I would have guessed that this was a thunderstorm approaching (Blackwood)
