For all the reasons explained ie source surface air, low SSTs, wet ground, no real day on day heating etc I feel we’ve missed out on something special and the 34c is a good 4-5c lower than what we could of expected with one or more of the previously mentioned factors being better positioned.

No wet ground here...never rains with this horrible east wind all the time blowing.

Facts.

Don’t get me wrong, great day today. But it could have been so much better.

With France getting 45c, we should of had 38-40c easily.

Well at least a 35c somewhere surely, maybe we got there though in some place or other.

That doesn't help me much but well done to whoever ends up with the prize!

What happened to all the weather stations to the SE of London these days? We used to get reports from Gravesend, Biggin Hill, and good old Greenwich. Guess we have become second class citizens down this way, certainly feels like it sometimes, all the weather reports seem to be around West London and Surrey.

Was still 33c here at 7pm, warm hair dryer breeze from about 4pm onwards.

Looks like the 28th. June 1976 Southampton Mayflower Park record  of 35.6 for June will remain intact then! That is the hottest outdoors shade temperature I've ever experienced, I'm not far from there, and it was a loooong time ago! Often forgotten is that the day before it was 35.5 there.

But my prediction for today of 30.6 failed miserably.

Just as indication to how strong the sea breeze was here today, it finally stopped at 7pm at the temperature has started rising. Back up to 25.1c now...

It’s quite an impressive record considering so many others have fallen in recent years.

i expect it will go in the next few years. Had we not had that cool flow this week, it would have been annihilated.

There is a 36.7 deg recorded in 1911 and even more impressive 35.6 deg in 1906 that was 1st September

Yes, it seems to me that it can get up to around 34c quite readily, but for some reason its pretty hard work achieving the 35-36c range no matter the synoptics.

Haha I was doing a spot of sunbathing on Mayflower Park today and it was hot, but with quite a keen breeze just keeping the temperature down slightly.

I'm probably the only one on here who is quite glad to see the record still holding!

We are on an island. So those temperatures will be hard to achieve. But it’s only a matter of time before 40C is breached.

What did Paris get to in the past few days?

Not as hot as I thought it would be. They were forecasting 38C. Maybe that’s why we didn’t get as high as some of us thought it might?

Maybe affected by the same cooler flow?

Not the only one, I always root for Mayflower Park  when the record is in danger! Sad that I am, a few years ago I hunted around and located the exact spot where the now defunct instrument enclosure was located, I like to know the lay of the land whenever records are broken...
