Wind has suddenly dropped after a very intense shower and now a rainbow.  Pretty crazy weather

What a strange day...? 27C, only a few miles' up the road, and a strong cyclonic s'werly blowing! :shok:

Exactly!...can't remember ever experiencing temps that high (nearly 26c here) in such synoptics...times are a changin'

Remember folks, if anyone from the NE, the NW or Scotland whinges about not having any storms, we can gently remind them about 2019.....

They've had more storms in the Highlands, this last three-weeks, than I saw in twenty-years!:oldsad:

Yeah they've hit the storm jackpot this past fortnight. Mind you, just took a wee gander at the radar and it looks like there is something incoming about to greet Ipswich

Still 21c here and humidity at 81% The strong southerly wind off the channel and cloud cover stopping it from falling, going to be a warm humid night here despite the wind

Ah, remember getting the ferry from Harwich to Gothenberg too many years ago now. Ah the long gone days of my youth. The best part watching to sun set into the sea, I never knew before then that it looked oval when it set over the sea.

Having a bit of a squall here in Bognor now but still no rain! Very disappointed as tomorrow I will have to water the garden with the hosepipe. Half my plants have died already.

Wind thinks it is a yoyo here!

Finally it is pouring down! Yay! It does pay to whinge then! Very squally too and apples tumbling from tree. 20C still here.

The following chart from Weatherquest shows the max wind gusts in East Anglia in August from 1981 to 2018 and suggests that tomorrow's wind strengths are not actually that out of the ordinary (in EA). To quote:

"On average, 4 in every 5 years produce a gust ≥40mph in August; for 50mph it's 2 in every 5 years".

Here's the Arpege sequence from 07.00 in the morning until 22.00 in the evening, suggesting gusts could reach 60 mph along the South Coast and 50 mph almost anywhere inland, but particularly Surrey, Sussex and Kent.

But I suspect it will be the duration of the wind strength that will be noteworthy tomorrow; kicking off early in the morning and not clearing through until tomorrow evening. We'll be fed up getting buffeted around by then.

Winds already blowing strong enough to mean it will be a disturbed nights sleep tonight as I am less than half a mile from the beach and the prevailing winds howl through our back garden like a banshee when the wind reaches storm force. A neighbours young silver birch tree is already almost touching the ground in the strongest gusts. Too dark to see if my pear tree is damaged yet.

Usually Bognor Regis is sheltered just a little by the Isle of Wight due to prevailing South Westerly winds but when the wind is more Southerly then we can really get damaging gusts and currently it is Southerly. I love stormy weather.

Now a F8 gusting F9 so very likely to be gusting F10 here in Bognor by the morning.

Very windy here too already (Hawkinge for those on mobiles) and warm at 18c

Was thinking of getting my handheld anemometer out tomorrow and going to the seafront to see what speed I can record. MO showing gusts of 57mph early afternoon tomorrow in the seafront.

Not unusual in the autumn but not as normal in August.

Wind suddenly really picked up again after a lull for a few hours. Just had a really heavy downpour amidst the wind, seriously squally!

Thought the wind wasn't meant to strengthen til about 6am (going by meto and bbc) so wondering if it's coming through early or is this just a taster?!

Also, I don’t remember having felt such wam, humid air on a cyclonic SW...

The charts/synoptic pattern clearly looks 'autumnal': 2 days of scudding clouds and the wind whistling through the telegraph wires...BUT, temperatures are far from autumnal. 27C is simply not autumnal!
