Ive got a feeling the all time record isn't going to be broken. To much cloud around in the all important places

Just popped outside in city of London.  Blue sky and it's roasting, you can feel the heat off the pavement and the tarmac is getting a bit squidgy.  Temp on one building shows 36.7c

Too much cloud coming up from France now. Record safe, certainly at Heathrow. Unless the cloud dissipates.

Wow  they just broken the u.k. temp record for july at heathrow  so you were completely wrong in saying it was safe,Will the all time record go?

Upto 35c in Liphook, but there is more and more mid level cloud coming in as expected from the showers, so got to be getting close to the peak.

Close to the all time record now, just 1.7c needed (probably an hour of good sunshine needed at most). I suspect one of those stations in the 36 range will break the record.

10 minutes from Peterborough and I can confirm its baking...and the sky is still clear. Been driving and my car would not go below 37..

Sorry I meant the all time record. The July record was never in doubt today.

Reached 37.3c but now dropping back.  Might be game over for St Neots.

Somewhere needs to get to 99.86f / 37.7c so I can win the NWX competition

After making good progress to 36.6C here in Hextable, it's now settled back to 36.4C as the breeze has increased and there is a small patch of high lever cloud.

I haven't a clue what it is in Epsom.all I know is that I'm still in the air conditioned restaurant watching those walking past, sweating buckets!

14:00 update.

16 miles E of Cambs, 7 miles W of Cavendish...

37.4c, 35% humidity.

The all time record will go, but will it be Cambridge, Cavendish, or possibly Peterborough or outside chance of Santon Downham? How does the progression of cloud cover moving northwards looking for these locations?

big bank of cloud formed over Bedford....due to Sun position/incidence ... has shaded St Neots - record unlikely to go if cloud intensifies ....however....

I think we need to look towards the triangle.......Cambridge - Cambourne/Papworth Everard/Huntingdon - record might be possible there

(maybe south of Cambridge but there is light cloud a good 20 miles away SSE of St Neots which may affect places like Saffon Walden/Haverill / Royston/Baldock/ etc........ sky is still very clear about a mile east of St Neots ....

East of Cambridge might be the other spot to break the record- think Newmarket upto Thetford Forest might be good too ... but cools the closer to the East Anglian coast

Afternoon all

To the east of London we're at 35c but as always a slight breeze from the Thames Estuary takes the top off the temperature and while a little cloud has amounted to nothing the breeze means we never reach the values recorded to the north and west of the city.

Good luck to those tilting at records this afternoon - I do think today might be the hottest day of the year (or it might not). It will be the hottest day in July I think.

The cloud is very slow moving but still registering 38 in my garden

I'm keeping an eye on Cambridge airport METAR as it could be the one to break the record (I guess its an official site?)

Weird, intermittently cloudy last 20 mins or so yet managed to get back up after a tiny drop and even higher to 37.7c!!  In times gone by, any cloud scuppered the temps quite quickly yet its quite resilient here.

In terms of locations that have no cloud at the moment. There's definitely an area of likely hood.

Windy is awesome by the way!
