Bedroom was 33c last night. Fan on, both windows open. Did what i did last year and have a shower then have a damp flannel to hand- does the job. However heat makes me sleepy, so I only woke up because hubs got up due to a noise he was hearing, other than that slept till 6am.

Garden is (in shade) 28.9c.  This is going up fast and steady. The most I have seen is 34c the last few days. House is 28c, hubs office is 29c.

3 of four fans on - hubs brought bubs a paddling pool \o/

Looking at the forecasts the storms do not seem to have as greater impact on the temperature than would normally be the case.

The following broadcast by Met Office probably explains why

In essence it stats that the air is so hot aloft and the air that needs to be heated is so shallow  that very little solar heating is required

Same thing happened in July 2015. The mid level cloud did drop temperatures from 34 to 31c which held for several hours, but between 1-3pm temps rose from 31c back upto 36.7c at Heathrow, due to just how hot the air was aloft.

Same thing would happen today, indeed the storms that are present really aren't all that impressive anyway, though they may strengthen as they head into land again.

Also they may be JUST far enough west to not really have much if any impact on the regions with the highest expected temperatures anyway.

The clouds are moving so slow that it might not even reach north of London before 3

Welcome to the sahara, waiting for a camel to turn up in my garden

Don't know about camels, lass...But, for some inexplicable reason, there's a very positive temperature anomaly centred in Westminster, today. Coincidence?❓

Those showers are moving near due north but they really aren't that impressive nor widespread.

I think there maybe an increase in cloud for 30-60 mins at Heathrow which may slow things down around midday but for now not seeing enough to suggest the record can't go today.

31.6 at Heathrow, amazingly hot, think that's nearly an hour ahead of 2003.

It's days like today where you need to visit the local co-op and just walk round all day.

There’s already some beefy looking clouds & convection heading up from france, hopefully we’ll get a layer of cloud before the temperature gets too high

Can see the showers over the channel now.

Not that impressive, no anvil but towering cumulus, looks high based from here but too early to tell.

Not sure how much rain will reach the ground as well.

Also, pretty small scale cells that are still discrete. No obvious overhanging cloud away from the cell either, so as long as it misses London, it's not going to make any difference.

Certainly! However not sure there is the instability aloft yet on a wide enough scale to allow these cells to go to the races.

I'm on the path though so I will keep it updated.

32.3oC in Epsom and Cambridge now - that's quite the increase in the last 20 minutes! Especially for Cambridge.

I'm currently in East London - Isle of Dogs. Not a cloud in the sky - it feels like mid 30's here. The car temp just showed 33oC.

Some ‘extreme’ thunderstorms possible later for our region

“In addition to the record breaking heat today, severe thunderstorms will break out and literally explode into life - especially NW/N England & S Scotland. Locally extreme storms possible in SE England should CAP break (given 36-39°C) certainly possible. #heatwaveuk #heatwave”
