Dad just spoke a former colleague who lives nearby.  Apparently, he was also rather shaken by the strike that woke me.  Apparently the one we had the other year (which I seem to recall I mentioned here at the time) hit a tree in the village only around 400 yards from us.  Not sure where last nights' hit, but it can't have been far.

Well heat really building here on the Essex Riviera, currently 29.8c - making it the hottest day of the year here surpassing 28.2c and probably another 3 hours or so until temps peak!

Only saw lightning in the distance here overnight, no thunder so missed all the storms.

I've had three very near misses with lightning. Once looking out the window it hit the road outside. The next driving a car just in front - it literally blinded me and the last hit the house opposite (all different locations) Scary stuff it can be

On the subject of lightning strikes, my scariest was arriving at gymnastics at Tolworth recreation centre with my son on a hot afternoon and within a minute, the car park we had just crossed took a big strike that was not just ear splitting but also smelt so strongly of metal. All the kids ran to the open door to see what had happened while all the parents yelled 'get inside'. It's more the smell than the sound that takes me back to it, but it certainly made us all jump.

He’ll get you yet. Just his aim is a bit rubbish at the moment.

Got a decent light show last night, wasn't expecting it until I looked on Blitz and saw storms had formed further east so I checked Meto and they had extended the warning further east. Most of the lightning was IC but two of them were positive which blinded me even though the lightning was a few miles away, the thunder was incredibly loud and deep.

30c here at work in Chatteris so another hot one. Tomorrow still looks rather scary in terms of potential maxima.

30.1C in the garden. Finally in a Met0 warning for storms so that's jinxed it.

The cat doesn't like storms. She's black and I nearly fell over her last night.

Looking at it, storm 2 last night built as the main lot moved across so feeling blessed.

Genuine question so please don’t be offended.

Does it concern you at all that we’re destroying our environment and this is a direct response of it ? When I see charts like this all I feel is shame and fear for the future.

It would appear that Worthing may not even breach the 30c mark tomorrow.

Good luck to the rest of you inland in your ovens

Yup. A few websites have 33 to 34, and others have high 20s.

It's all up in the air!

Where ever Davis weather is in Worthing, it's not even 22c at the moment. https://www.davisworthing.co.uk/

It is 34 here, and I checked with the weather stations near me.
I will not stray far from my fan today.

It’s correct in saying 23c could be the max so I’m hoping it’s correct about tomorrow! Could go either way

Don't let common sense stand in the way of people who like sun and extreme temperatures and only think of the here and now...totally agree!

Of course I feel concerned! And no offense taken mate;  I guess the excitement comes from the prospect of seeing a historical event tomorrow, and moreover, the potential thunderstorms, having completely missed out last night. But yes, it is rather concerning, generally.

I’m sorry if my post came across as somewhat shallow and thoughtless. It was certainly, certainly not my intention!!!

To help me cope with the heat and humidity, I am in a darkened room.  I have a table top fan next to me. At 14:00 the outside temperature is 28°C and the inside temperature is at 25.9C.

Here in Burnham it is currently 32.0c (measured with British Standard Max/Min bulbs in a Stevenson Screen housing) and a slight westerly element to the breeze so shouldn't be too different to Woodham Ferrers though there are always variations.

it is quite interesting in here when there differing views of excitement or trepidation. i think Trotski and dont take this the wrong way. this type of weather is unheard of here. the last really high temperature was 2003. i would love to see records broken, we are weather enthusiasts, this is why we are on here discussing it.

Poor souls cant have a true understanding on global warming, and as this is a short term mega heatwave. Explain what the difference is for storms with wind at 75mph or freezing weather that is -18 in the home counties. its a weather extreme. dont disagree on global warming but dont rain on peoples excitement.
