Very warm/hot 850hPa temperature synoptics

Recommended Posts

Whilst some models continue to churn out some extraordinarily warm synoptics for next week (in terms of 850hPa temperatures), here's some of the warmest 850hPa temperature synoptics for the UK from the past. Thanks to @WorldClimateSvc on Twitter in helping me find some of these! Have you discovered any others? Feel free to post them.

How many remember the thunderstorms associated with this?

I was starting my next year at high school on the day of that chart, I remember the night before staying up quite late watching distant lightning flashing away somewhere over the Irish Sea gradually getting closer. Must have been thousands of lightning strikes over the Irish Sea, I think some areas in and around  really copped it.

There was a fair deal of warmth elsewhere though. It got upto 31C in Hull I think and it hit over 32C-33C elsewhere on a few days. Short in length but a pretty decent spell of heat.

I reckon if the 06z GFS came off a few areas would get into the mid 30s and perhaps a few favoured spots getting a bit higher if the hot uppers persist longer.

Here's one from 3 August 1990 1800z, with the 20C 850hPa isotherm just about touching the south of the UK. That was the day Cheltenham reached 37.1C.
