I'm not bad at geography, but when watching the latest Met Office forecast, a huge mystery lake has appeared to the north of the Caspian sea in Russia?

Any explanations?

There is a lake there on the map but a lot smaller, could this be caused by the mercators projection where on some maps places nearer the poles appear larger than they actually are to make the shape of countries remain the same on a flat surface map?

I think it may be, but the size is way out of proportion

I'm pretty sure Rybinsk Reservoir is the one right next to the 'w' in 'what'.

No reason at all for the mystery lake to be where it is.

it's the size of it, where all the other lakes in the area are to scale
